I used to drive to Los Angeles frequently in the '70s (gas under fifty cents) and '80s (gas under a buck). As long as you stayed away from a few places like South Central or Skid Row (scattered bums confined to a couple of blocks) it was safe to walk around, day or night. Downtown was kind of lifeless, compared to other big cities, especially at night, but out in West L.A. it was clean, safe, and a lot of fun. Hanging out in Hollywood, Westwood, or driving out Sunset to Tower Records was a treat. A few miles east, cruising Whittier Boulevard on Friday and Saturday nights was a blast, and nobody got hurt.
