Despite him being really strict I've thought he was a good teacher who genuinely cared for his students and wanted to see them do well.

Mr. Hand was one of the best things about this movie. I wish I had had a teacher like him when I was in high school. And he was played perfectly by the great Ray Walston, who unfortunately is remembered mostly for starring in a dumb sitcom in the 1960s.
