Opinions on Mr. Hand?

Despite him being really strict I've thought he was a good teacher who genuinely cared for his students and wanted to see them do well.

He was a dang good teacher, and you said it--showed care for making sure his students were taking the education in.

reply

Yeah. He really cared about them learning their history!

We could probably use a few more like him these days.

reply

He ran a fowl or the pizza though

I had a teacher like him in high school, strict and humiliated anyone disrupting his class but he also gave 100% to each student in and out of the class.

reply

Definitely NOT on dope.

Off the subject, but I thought Ray Walston was fabulous as Mr. Hand in this. These days, Fast Times is an iconic movie but during filming it was likely considered a summer throw-away as far as the seasoned Walston was concerned, yet he gave a superb performance. He stole every scene he was in.

Mr. Hand even got a stoned out Spicoli to learn something, but once Spicoli passed his class he turned into a violent, liberal idiot.

reply

A violent, liberal, humorless idiot.

I don’t know if he “genuinely cared” for their well-being. He certainly was determined to do his job, that job being that the students learn the material. While he did want to see them do well, he didn’t seem too interested in their personal lives.

Except for the fact that he did allow Spicoli to go to prom. That was pretty cool and personal. I’m sure his thinking was, “This kid is a burn out and a waste of my time 95% of the time. Better just make some progress, cut my losses, and wish him well.”

Spicoli was the biggest F-up in class, but Hand went to his house to tutor him. If that's not genuinely caring, nothing is.

reply

A little eccentric but a good teacher.

reply

Very good teacher and.....hilarious!
I loved the scenes with him and Mr. Spicoli so much. That character actually made Sean Penn likable.
