Portraying sexual assault as pleasure

I know movies like this in the 1970s and 1980s could do anything imaginable to women, but many found that this scene (the Tree Rape Scene) was particularly difficult and disturbing because Cheryl sounded like she was enjoying/having an orgasm while being raped by the branches and vines. Not sure who would answer this but was this director's intent or the actress'?

Rape victims can have orgasms and they are by no means enjoying it. Perhaps that was the intention.

I never got that vibe from the scene.

I just watched it. She seemed in pain to me.

In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.

The forest attack scene did have that one shocking moment when the branch hit her in her privates. However, there is another scene where Ash is being raped by his headless and possessed girlfriend, who seems to be enjoying herself!

"You see what you want- you take. You take it! And I am going to do just that!"

To be fair, there's an extremely fine line between the noises made by people in pain and sexual pleasure. I once had a conversation with a very good gay friend where he asked me how I could bring myself to hurt women like that by having sex with them and it transpired that he thought sexual groans were an indication of them being hurt, having only been with men, himself, and, therefore, in a much more inherently painful way of doing things.

I honestly don't think the film ever intended to portray anything close to the character enjoying what was happening to them. The idea that they were enjoying themselves is something I've never heard of before or even thought of.

If you watch the behind the scenes interviews they edited the scene without really telling Ellen Sandweiss what the end result would be. It's entirely possible they filmed scenes of her been fondled or masterbated by the vines and then added those scenes post violation. Anyway who knows? To me it sounded like she was having a pretty intense one.

I never got that impression from the scene at all. She seemed in pain and agony to me, all the time throughout.

Consider the very real possibility that the OP was a masochist, therefore pain “sounds” like pleasure to it. Yes, the pronoun “it” is intended. Not a typo.

A lot of people have replied to your post saying 'I never got that vibe' or 'it sounds like she's in pain to me'. Were they watching the same movie? She struggles at first but there's definitely a moment where it suddenly becomes erotic for her. Don't understand anyone that doesn't pick that up.

What if she was being possessed and raped. It could explain why it might appear that she is enjoying it.

And what fresh Hell is this?, Malory from Archer(Dorothy Parker)
