When the kids are flying on their bikes...
Why bother peddling? Those weenie kids thought their peddling was making a difference.

shareThat is very funny
shareAs much as I hate to admit it (because I LOVE this film so much) the bike flying sequence (at least parts of it) look severely dated now but let’s be fair it is almost 40 years old! Can you imagine how amazing those effects looked to audiences back in 1982! They would’ve been groundbreaking back then. Just think how well that sequence could be done now, with present day technology. Not that I want it to be redone, no way! E.T. is a special film.

No, they looked exactly the same in 1982 as they look now, i.e., not amazing at all.

No, they weren't. It was just a chroma key effect (AKA: "blue screen," AKA: "green screen"), which was very old hat by 1982. It wasn't even a particularly good chroma key effect, because it was before the days of digital compositing, and you can see outlines (matte lines) around the people/objects in front of the blue or green screen. Back then chroma key effects looked best in an outer space setting (like Star Wars), because the black background of space hid the outlines.
The Thief of Bagdad (1940) was the first movie to use chroma key effects, and it won an Oscar for Best Special Effects, because in 1940 it actually was groundbreaking.
Pure panic. They know peddling makes the bike go so they keep peddling. Would you want to take a chance that you stop and the bike falls from the sky?
