I was a young adult (21) when this movie was released for the first time, and loved it right from the get-go. By that point in my life, I'd seen dozens of movies in theaters, but it was the first one that seemed to have such a profound effect on the audience. As the final scene played out, collective sobs could be heard as Elliot and E.T. said farewell to each other, and when the lights came up as the final credits rolled, the majority of the audience applauded. Of all the movies I've seen in theaters over the years, it remains the only one I've ever seen where the audience clapped at the end. I have the feeling that I would have been just as enamored with this film if I'd seen it as a child. Thirty-some years hence, it remains my favorite movie of all time.
"Well, can't he just beam up?"
"This is *reality* Greg."
