I really didn't enjoy this movie

Hi All,

I was taken to see this movie by my parents in my youth. At the time I didn't enjoy it. I'm not sure why. I found it a little boring to be honest.

At that time my parents just thought I was being difficult, but I have to say, today I still don't find understand what everyone is on about.

I guess it's just one of those times when one person doesn't enjoy what most people do. Interestingly, I like most of Spielberg's other movies. In fact looking through his 'director' list there are a couple which I can take or leave, but most of them are in my 'I really enjoyed' category.

Who cares. do you think it makes you special or something because you don't like something most people do.

reply

Not at all. Each to their own. I commented on this movie the same as I comment on lots of movies. Some of them I like, some of them I don't.

If you liked it great... it's just not for me.

Some people are so rude!

You are entitled to your opinion just like everyone else. If you didn’t enjoy this film that’s fine. All film is subjective.

reply

I respect your opinion, but I don't understand it. I'll always love E.T. and the scene where E.T. dies continues to make me cry every time.

reply

Yeah, hell... I don't understand it either.

It may be an age thing. When ET came out I was 16. So, looking at 16 year olds today with the demographic going for things like The Fast and the Furious (2001) well, something soppy like ET just doesn't match up. Perhaps if I was older or younger at the time I saw it I may have enjoyed it. Naturally, now I could probably watch it with new eyes, but still, I have to overcome my previous views.

Interestingly (maybe I'm a negative S.O.B. ), I see some shows that I thought were the ants pants when I was younger and cringe at seeing them now. For example I recently tried to re-live my youthful enjoyment of Battle of the Planets (1978) and Moonraker (1979) and oh... my... God... are they bad.

So maybe it's easier to realise how bad something was rather than how good it was 

I'm 16, and almost all I watch are '70s, '80s, and '90s movies. I think most of today's movies suck.

Maybe it is the fact you were 16 when it came out.

I was 8 and I loved it then, and still love it now. If it came out today for the first time, I'm not sure how I'd like it. I'd probably still like it, but not the same. I think growing up in the 80s, it has that nostalgia thing going on, and the fact that the main characters were kids, most kids watching it wanted to be Elliot. I'm the same way with Goonies. I wanted to be one of the kids experiencing the adventure just like I wanted to be Elliot, and find a friendly alien.

There will always be people who will dislike The Godfather, LOTR, GOT season 1, Ben Hur, etc. They usually dislike them because they are only used to current movies and can't relate to anything different. They have a limited palette.

reply

100% agree. I never got what people saw in this movie. The plot makes very little sense, it's butt ugly, everything looks dirty. And it's all very 80s. Now Spielberg has done some great work with Jaws and Jurassic Park but this movie never did it for.

i told you not to stop the boat. Now lets go. Apocaylpse Now

Well, as a child, it might be hard to understand it all, but as you grow up, you get the story. Maybe it's just you. I think the reason the film is touching is the way ET acts-he isn't stupid and you can tell a lot of work went into making him a character you care about. When he leaves at the end, it is touching because he is saying goodbye to us but his line about being right here is a way to remember him. Otherwise, there is no hope for you if you can't be moved by this film.

reply

Honestly I just don't see how anybody except a child could enjoy this cutesy thing. Well, maybe the parents getting joy out of it because their little kid likes it or something.

reply

Nope. I was 25 in 82. Loved the movie then and love it now.

E.T. is one movie where I loved the first half and the finale of, 2/3rd's into the movie when the government got involved did get a little boring towards me, overall I give E.T. an 8/10

This is a film I have never, ever, been tempted to watch. Nothing for me here. It’s just not for me. If you like it, more power to you. I do not like a saccharine Steven Spielberg. Also, I’m not 6.

And, Steve, 3 posts above? What a pompous, arrogant asshole you are to pontificate that there is “no hope” for people who are like I am. You know who is hopeless? Small-minded, unimaginative, solipsistic folks like you are. To quote Jim Morrison, “You are locked in a prison of your own devise.”

I prefer Close Encounters of the Third Kind myself. It was a bit boring when I saw it for the first time as a teenager, but as an adult I've learned to appreciate it's strengths. E.T. on the other hand, has always seemed a mediocre kid movie to me, in 1982 and today. I enjoy the first and last 10 minutes, though (not counting the main/end credits). The ending is quite moving, but not as moving as the ending of CEotTK.
