How do we know how old this film is...?

Because not only do the teen boys ride bicycles, but they can REALLY ride them!

These days, most kids would use their tablets or IPhones to *phone home*.
And be caught by the government because they're too fat to run, never mind ride bikes.

Just an observation.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

It all starts with the parents and schools not much better. They've cut gym glasses, food is atrocious and with my kids schools, they don't enforce rules. I've complained about clothing lengths--"parents complain they can't find dresses long enough for school dance!" (Just barely covering the girls behinds!) Or about cell phones being permitted in classes--"to get them ready for the 'real world'!" I was told. My kid says some kids are on Netflix during class! Most on social media. I went back for another degree and students were kicked out of college for having cell phones out. I'd dare anyone at work to watch a video on YouTube or update FaceSpace while in a board meeting. My kids don't have video games--they play outside. My daughter lost her cell phone due to being on social media without permission. We have a landline.
It seems the future is going to be lazy, uninformed, overweight people with an overinflated sense of entitlement. Unless the adults change, it's only get worse....

I don't have kids (I have a niece and nephew, who are very active), so I wasn't as aware of this until recently. Last Summer I was out mowing the lawn on what may have been the most perfect day ever. Low 80s, not a cloud in the sky, a warm, gentle breeze blowing. It was around mid afternoon and when I finished and shut off the mower it hit me that all I could here was the sound of air conditioners buzzing. No kids playing, nothing. I walked out front and the streets and yards were deserted.

I'm tempted to say that our parents generation felt the same thing about us, as we were the first generation with cable TV, home video, video games etc., but in the last decade or so it's gotten exponentially worse. And you can't, as a society, put that toothpaste back in the tube so to speak.

Raised in the late 70's-80's, we had were always outside playing. My cousins had an Atari, and we eventually got a Nintendo system, but for us, being outside with a neighborhood filled with kids outside was the nest!

Ahhhhhh, good times. That's why I will always revere Spielberg's films so much. I grew up with the friggin' things!

And each film left an impact on a certain part of my life.

Dare Donald Trump to do just that, and see what happens. Your world is being swept away by the 21st century manner.

Well maybe the kids aren't outside because the parents are afraid of global warming, hur dur...

The thing is, the kids of the 80s who had a lot of fun are the crappy parents of today who raise these lazy obese children. You have no one to blame but yourselves.

It's an anecdote that ignores at least part of reality.

Kids did seem more physically fit back then.

You say that, but watch the scene again where the kids are trying to escape and return ET home. (Just before ET makes the bikes fly to escape.)

In the long shots, the actor playing Elliott I believe becomes a stunt double. It's hidden, because he's wearing a bright red hoodie and is shown from side-shots only, meaning you don't see his face. But once you notice it, it's hard not to notice it.

reply

They all had stunt doubles. There were 8 of them and they didn't even know what the movie was about when their scenes were being filmed. They thought the movie was called "A Boy's Life", which was E.T.'s working title.

Well also, you notice on Halloween, the kids often are trick-or-treating by themselves, or have their older siblings chaperoning? These days most kids have their parents along.

Or the kids were out and about, doing stuff together, instead of having their eyes glued to their smartphones and always online. Soooo much has changed since 2000.

However, the thing about the bicycles is, we still have many cyclists of all ages where I live, including kids, which is a good sign :) What's weird is, many of the boys like to pop wheelies.
