Nyman's grind

Does nobody else find Michael Nyman's "music" trivial, cheap and trashy, and an obstacle to enjoyment? It's absolutely banal but intrusive and grating: it really gets in the way. Rubbish! ( ... and yes, I did read the extensive comments by dzap76 ... )

I thought the music worked very well.

The score was what got me interested in the film to begin with. It suits the film perfectly, being a modern take on Purcell's work, for the most part.

I love Nyman's minimalist approach. His scores are like classical concentrate.

As a musician and music critic I think I can state with some certainty that the music is objectively (if there is such a thing) terrific.

However, I did think there were three or four instances where it was distractingly loud in the sound mix. In that sense it was indeed occasionally intrusive. I think you reacted to that the first time it happened (which is quite early in the film) and decided that the music itself was trivial and banal, which it certainly is not. Which is to say that you were having a legitimate negative reaction but incorrectly attributing the reason.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

To be 100% honest, the first time I saw this, I thought Nyman's score was extremely annoying. I also didn't like the film overall that much.

However, years later I saw this film again. This time I loved everything about it, in particulalrly Nyman's score. I don't know if it was the few years added some maturity to me, if I knew more about Greenaway's work as a whole by then, or if I was just more in the mood for it...but in my second veiwing I "got" this movie.

Oh...I dod feel the music is purposly obtrusive. A reoccuring style element in a lot of Greenaway's work, even without Nyman.

Anyway, glad I gave this movie a second chance. It really deserved it.

I am surprised. In my opinion, Nyman's score is one of the best things in this film! He actually borrowed from Henry Purcell, one of the greatest composers.
