after they went back into the sea did they just die or are they still out there?

Richard actually came back (like they did) and he killed them both...cos he's bas-ass like that.

Chances are they either fled into the sea and died, or they're alive somewhere and are together for eternity. Richard more than likely drowned.
Or maybe Richard survived, changed his name to Frank Drebin, and became a cop.

shareI think we're supposed to assume that they returned to the sea and then their souls departed this world and they get to spend eternity together. As for Richard, what happens to him depends on wether or not he's able to hold his breath long enough for the water to set him free.

I wonder if that means Nathan Grantham went back to his grave after he got his cake. And what happened to The Crate Monster after he was thrown into the water? Did he go back to get his revenge against Henry or did he drown eventually? So many unanswered questions but I love the film anyways.

I think we see foot prints in the sand indicating they went back into the sea. Maybe they drowned again or are just hanging around under water...who knows. But they only "came back" to get revenge on Richard.
