Just a Bad film

I dislike it when people come on boards like this and talk crap about films that I like, I think to myself "Geez get over it, if you didn't like it then don't watch it again". So it's with some trepidation that I say.
I can't see how this film has such a cult status.
As part of a 24 hour Horror Movie marathon for Halloween my friends and I hired it and I gotta say I was excited about seeing it as I'd heard so much about it but never seen it before.
But it disapointed in almost every way possible.
The acting was...just horrific. The story was ok, original I guess but nothing amazing. The direction was hackneyed and mired in the 70's the effects were nothing to write home about, I know it was done on a shoe string budget but it was only just forgivable. And I'm sorry the sight of an amorphous blob grinding on a non-acting woman was not horrifying so much as sad and slightly funny.
Also every woman in the movie appeared to be a man in a wig.
I assume some people here like the movie, instead of saying I'm a dick or have no taste tell me what you liked about the movie. Maybe that way I'll see why this film enjoys such a great reputation.

I generally feel the same way, I don't usually see the point of making a thread saying you didn't like it, though I do tend to chime in on those threads when I agree with the fact that it's not as good of a film as people think. That being said, I will have to disagree with you on this one. And I will give you my reasons, of course realizing that none of this will change your initial feelings about it, though I do implore you to watch it again, sometimes a repeated viewing, even the next day, is enough to change your mind.

For me there are a few reasons this movie is amazing. I can go on about how I first saw it on video, how the depiction of Times Square was more or less spot on, the characters were like many characters in Times Square at the time, and the whole movie captured the seediness of NYC at that time. To me, that hotel was real and those people were real. I've known many a person like the hotel guests.

Obviously some if not most of the acting is bad. But like when you listen to someone sing a song and he may not be as talented as the next guy, but his earnest and soul and feeling come through stronger than the singer who has perfect pitch. That's how I feel about the acting here, no one may be a great actor, but they all try REALLY hard, more so than many "real" actors out there who walk on set and read their lines as if they were themselves and then collect a paycheck.

The story is funny and silly, but the backbone of it is real, and one people can relate to. Who hasn't felt alone in the world, or like they had no choices when they were underage? Who wouldn't want a connection with someone like the lead guy did with his brother? Who hasn't felt like a stranger in a strange world at least once in their life? Who hasn't felt murderous feelings towards those who have done them wrong? I feel like the main character, and his darker other half, represent all of us, and how we feel.

Plus the story is more of a sad and lonely story, the main guy is likable and sort of naive, with no chance of ever living a normal happy life. Some of the hotel residents are sad, but trying to be happy, living as best as they can. The aunt is a sweet and caring person, who tried her best to do what she felt was right. Even the doctors, as horrible as they are, were more misguided and messed up, than pure evil.

The creature is part human, and you can relate to his pain and torture. The thought of him being treated as a second class person, as if he didn't matter, like his feelings don't exist. This is how many people feel, a constant feeling in many who possibly attach themselves to this film. All in all, no matter how funny this story is, it is a sad one at its heart, and one that people can really relate to.

The movie is also very funny, almost a comedy, and for those of us that choose to laugh at all the horrible things in life, well, this movie fits right in. We see the creature and laugh, knowing full well (at least I know) that if this were our lives it would be hell. We see the miserable characters and laugh, the miserable settings and laugh. The humor makes the dark themes a bit brighter, though this is a seriously dark comedy at best.

The gore, the effects, the look of the film, it's all so low budget, but again, all done in earnest. They knew they didn't have any money, but they made it as best as they could on the budget they had. There was no deliberate attempt to be cheesy, they just did the best they could with little budget. That's what makes it so fun, so silly, so engaging, and so amazing.

All in all there were a ton of films like this that came out, some amazing, some disappointing, and there will always be someone who doesn't agree with the film being great. For me this one is a particular fave, one that warms my heart, gives me laughs, gives me gore, gives me a good story and gives me old NYC, something I miss dearly.

Thank you! Sometimes when I write a post I just sort of throw one up there to put in my two cents in. I had just seen this movie again after many years, with my girlfriend who had never seen it, and the actress who plays the prostitute showed up at the screening as well and spoke about it. I can't say that I ever actively thought the things I wrote about the film, but when I went to write down why I felt the way I do about it, that was what came out. I think many times this is how things are when it comes to a film or song we like, you don't know why you like it, you just do. But when pressed to put it into words, sometimes you can figure it out. The funny thing is, when I wrote that I promptly forgot about it, but upon rereading it, I do think I made some valid points!
