Other movies that feature NYC in the late 70's - mid 80's?

I'm sure I'm not the only one that is interested in this period of cinema. And I was wondering if anybody could share with me some other titles, like Basket Case, Driller Killer, The New York Ripper, The Exterminator etc.
Specifically interested in any Exploitation, Horror or Thriller, the grungier the better. Especially ones that feature life from within the 42nd Street Culture.

Thanks in advance.

I can't thank all of you guys enough for your help. Some films that you have all mentioned I have seen, but several I haven't. I am researching for a screenplay I'm writing, set in and around a 42nd street NYC apartment (in 1979) Some of the films mentioned are very difficult to find, even through the usual 'underground' avenues. Though happy to say that I will soon have in my procession The Deadly Art of Survival, Tenement & Liquid Sky.

Thank you again and keep em coming. I must just add, that after watching some of these films, I like to spend a good hour in the bathtub cleansing my soul, as they are so GRIMY. Love em! lol.

Hmm, it was a little later than the time period you specified, and it was The Bronx, but to me Bad Lieutenant (1992) SCREAMS NYC and is a very colorful depiction of said city.

So much so I wholeheartedly recommend it - even though it's not an exact match to your criteria...

While it is a cartoon, Fritz the Cat captures the feel very well.

Combat Shock

Without a doubt the ultimate in New York 80's scuzz and grime

Absolutely perfect and the ending is nuts

Really not grungy, but really freakish in its own way:

Godspell.

The WTC was still under construction at the time it was filmed, and they had special permission to film a dance number on top of one of the towers.

Shaun Costello's WATERPOWER (1976) features some on-street footage of Times Square, most likely shot guerrilla-style without a permit.

'What does it matter what you say about people?'
Touch of Evil (Orson Welles, 1958).

A STRANGER IS WATCHING from 1982. It was filmed in and around Grand Central Station including disused tunnels underneath.

Lucio Fulchi's New York Ripper...shows NY in 1981 complete with grimy XXX theatres, also the Staten Island ferry inside and out -

Nighthawks with Stallone and Rutger Hauer is another... came out in 1981, but was shot in early '80, I believe.

Not the greatest movie, but certainly worth watching. Lotsa grungy street & subway scenes... and a memorable shootout in the old Xenon disco.

No one mentioned Death Wish that I saw which is kind of the classic New York as a grimy crime filled city movie.
