Michael is so annoying

I love, love, love Newhart, but Peter Scolari just annoys me. As in Bosom Buddies, he acts like he's always on the verge of a seizure. His voice (sounds like he's trying to be hip like Sammy Davis), his mouth is always going in all directions at once (again like he's having a seizure), and his antic demeanor (wonder if he was on cocaine or something) make it so I just can't stand the guy.

I feel that Peter's character Michael doesn't really fit on the show. He comes across as too "big city" and ruins the laid back feel of the show in general. I really wish they would have stuck with Kirk. I liked him much better.

What do you think?

Maybe that was the point.

I loved Peter on both Bosom Buddies and Newhart. And my all-time favorite sitcom characters are usually annoying: ie, Sheldon Cooper, George Costanza....and Michael Harris. In real life I might want to smack them in the head, but they're always welcome on my tv screen.

I was tickled to see PS playing Bernie Madoff's little brother on that tv movie a few weeks ago.

Michael and Stephanie together were extremely annoying, especially when they were being their shallow, superficial selves. But, despite that, after Michael's character came on the show, it seemed it came to life, with the addition of Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. Kirk or better, the actor that played him, was so wooden, and his comedic timing was off.

Nah, I like Michael. His well-worded sentences really catch me off guard and I chuckle every time.

I think both characters Michael and Kirk were equally annoying. And Stephanie was beyond annoying (as if that's even humanly possible). It's sad, because all three make the show unbearable to watch at times.

reply

I agree. As much as I wanted to punch Kirk in the face, I wanted to push Michael and Stephanie off a cliff.

When Michael cries ... he is quite a funny actor

reply

He's an actor. His character was supposed to be annoying, like George Costanza or Cliff Clavin. He did his job.

reply

Scolari was the only funny one on the show.(along with Duffy)

I just loved the Kirk character. His sarcastic wit was a great contrast to Bob's dry humor. I never thought it was an "improvement" to have him leave.

Always remember one of the funniest Kirk moments (to me anyway!). He was so happy when he proposed to Cindy and she accepted that he ran right over to the inn to share his good news. But everyone was upstairs asleep.

He didn't think it was that late and so he woke everyone up asking, "What is this, a school night?" LOL

I thought that captured the essential part of the character. HIS needs came first, so he was obnoxious without even rrealizing it. He was essentially a grown-up five year old.

reply

Exactly. Scolari and Duffy were the only funny characters on NEWHART, even though they became too broadly drawn very quickly.
