What Always Annoyed Me About the Ending

Don't get me wrong, I can totally appreciate the finale to "Newhart." It's inventive and funny and clever. I loved the way they tied the two series together. I thought it was amazing the first time I saw it. And I loved how "Breaking Bad" paid homage to the show with their "alternate ending." But I appreciated "Breaking Bad"'s ending as much as I did because it wasn't canon. In other words, "Breaking Bad" didn't present it as reality, but rather as a joke.

"Newhart" actually presented it as though that's what really happened. After watching eight seasons--after putting all that time in--I'm told that none of it ever actually happened? It was--somehow--an eight-year dream. It made me feel as though the rug had been pulled out from under me. I felt a little betrayed.

I know, I may be taking a sitcom a little too seriously. :) And I'm a huge Bob Newhart fan. I just wanted to see what other people thought.

Best-of-all-time finale for a TV show.

To those offended: Come on...it's a friggin Tee Vee show.

Suzanne Pleshette was worried about Mary Frann's feelings about the finale. Classy lady.

Whenever Bob Newhart would talk about that episode, he thought it was funny that the studio audience cheered and clapped, because they recognized the bedroom on the old Bob Newhart Show, even before the characters said anything.

They presented Newhart as though it were real?

Um, that guy Larry who had the diner? He had a brother named Daryl, and another brother named Daryl...

I didn't see the ending coming, and I howled. I rolled on the floor. I refuse to overthink it.

So these people came to Bob Newhart in a dream. I still like them just as much.

Exact Agreement

Plus they overplay the entire ending
Never heard of B Bad
but there you have it
copying from Newhart

And you want Newhart
to be real

Never returned to Vermont
after all this mess
they made of a great series

Nor long before
this series was ever on

Provided that
this really is a series
because they now say
that it did not happen

Even with hot J Duffy
and really sweet M Frann
what is up with that

Does this mean
that B Newhart
J Duffy
M Harris
P Scolari
nor any of the Darryls
ever receive royalties
because this series is a figment

And what about poor H Mancine
why did he waste
such an expert score
on something that never happened

And what evening was this on
Monday
what a wast of eight years
of Monday evenings
when you could have been
studying for a test
or writing a school paper
or making paper wads
for Tuesdays

All of those wasted Tuesdays
in school
talking about what didn't happen
on Newhart last evening
Even the teachers
were outdone
by stupid Hwood
or Vermont
or Chigaco
or wherever
this show did not happen

Good that those annoying mayors
and townsfolk
were just a part of B Newhart
and his wild imagination
gone wrong

But what about G Utley
and K Campmann or P Scholari
M Frann or J Duffy or whatshername
that cousin who leaves town
for some unexplained reason
well you just know what that means
and Kirk was supposed to be innocent

well itwas just his imagination
running away with him
from Chicago to Vermont to Hwood and back
and forth
because nobody knows
the trouble we went trhough
knowbody knows our sorrow

And that is all because
M Frann
B Newhart
J Duffy
P Scholari
T Postman
G Utley
and that Inn
are all still the best

Or compared to what
well at least
S Pleshette
has a last hurrah
to shine in the night
sideways
and after the camera fades
