Townies harassing cadets outside at the ball

What I don't understand is; why were those townie kids outside provoking and shouting at the cadets and their guests at the ball? What was the motivation ? Did they really have nothing better to do ? It just didn't make sense to me.

As a former military school cadet (6 years, 7th grade through 12th) I can tell you I got into my share of fights with "townies." There is a jealousy factor at work in addition to being an easily identifiable target for bullies due to having to wear uniforms when off-campus.

In my senior year, about 5 of us were jumped by about 20 of these turds and got our asses kicked. The main bully was an AWOL Marine from Parris Island who had a foot in height and about 30 pounds on me. I still have scars on my face from that dude. But, I pressed charges and he did jail time for 6 months. After his time was up, the Marines took him back to Parris for trial and prison.

The next year, they stopped making cadets wear uniforms off-campus.
