Does the Army really do 5-10 mile runs daily?

House: I have been on a date before.
Wilson: Not since disco died.

In the late 1980s when I served, we never ran more than two miles at a time.

If the Army is like the Marine Corps, basic training has a published training schedule that lists all of the events throughout boot camp. This includes precisely what time you get up, when you eat, how much time you have to shower, class schedules, and physical fitness schedules. If they did do a five mile run, it would not have been because of an infraction from one person, although they probably would say it was.

I bet these days the Sargeant would probably be brought up on charges for doing it without permission.

In basic training, any formation run longer than 3 miles would have been an oddity. They are really just getting you into shape to pass a 2-mile run event in a PT Test.

Now, ruck marches, on the other hand...at Ft. Jackson, in the late 70s-early 80s, a 10 to 15-miler was the norm, leading up to a 25-miler at the end.

It was, physically, probably tougher in the Marine Corp.

Cheers!

5-10 miles? No.

We ran 3.2 miles to prepare for the 2 mile PT.

We were told it was 2.5 miles, but I checked the base map.

If so they are going to have a lot of people dropping out because the average person can’t do that. Heck how Candy was able to do it is what I want to know .

Not normally unless you're terrible or your DIs are really mean. My buddy had to do 5-10 miles often back in the late 80's. It was a combination of his whole class constantly breaking rules and all their DIs being really hard on them. They didn't really learn any military stuff. They just PTd all day during boot. They couldn't close order drill. They had no idea what to do on parade. But they were in absurdly good shape.

reply

Nope. Rarely did over 2 miles aside from Friday running in group A.
We did a 5 mile at the end, but that was scheduled.
