The Army Intelligence Meeting Scene

I don't know if it's just me, but I absolutely love that scene.

It's supposed to be just a transition scene between the action-packed opening and the rest of the film, but it's so brilliantly executed. We are introduced to the main plot of the film, the role the Nazis play in this, Indy's love interest (and his academic life)... and the way the Ark is introduced with that picture is so intriguing and engaging.

It's also the first time we hear that little orchestral piece by John Williams when Indy opens the book. Still one of my favourite music tracks in history of film.

As far as "exposure" scenes go, this is as good as you can get. Today's producers wouldn't allow scenes like these to make the final cut. "This is just a bunch of people talking, we need to make them fight against a... polar bear or something to keep the audience engaged".

Spielberg, Lucas and Kasdan did a brilliant writing job there.

It's good screenwriting.

I always fast forwarded that scene. Its too slow

It's also my favourite scene. The other one is when Marion is almost blinded by the Gestapo guy before the bar shoot out. I tend to prefer this kind of moody conversation scenes over action bits.

I could not agree with you more.

Sure it was an "exposition" scene which many movie-goers for some reason hate (insults their intelligence I guess), but this was done brilliantly. It explains what the ark is (and not Noah's), it's early history, what likely happened to it after it disappeared, and why the occult obsessed Hitler would want it.

I also loved Dr. Marcus' look of admiration and pride as Indy was excitingly explaining the Staff of Ra.

and then the look on the federales faces when they realized they struck information gold by interviewing Drs. Brody and Jones.

I can never seem to pay attention during that scene, I'm always too busy fantasizing about 15/12/11-yr old Marion.
