Any recommendations of any other thought-provoking movies?

I first saw this movie years ago and I am still drawn to watch it frequently because of how much the movie makes you reflect on life. Anyone know of any other great thought-provoking movies similar to MDWA?

reply

Most Woody Allen movies.

it seems like richard linklater took his cue from Malle in "Waking Life". if you haven't seen it, check it out.

"today you're just some bitch that broke my heart and cut up my mother's wedding dress."

reply

Waking Life is similar and I prefer it.

Mind Walk is the most similar film i can think of.

Mind Walk is just bad. It fails to introduce anything mildly thought-provoking. I was excited about the movie going into it, but halfway through, I was bored by the pseudo-science and bland theories.

The Seventh Seal, on the other hand, is a fantastic film and well worth watching.

Harold and Maude. Another thought provoking film. I watch it at least once a year and always get something new out of it. Amazing film.

This isn't really a recommendation, but you could try Conversations with Other Women. To me, it was alone worth it for Helena Bonham Carter.

I didn't know what to expect when I first saw CwoW. It was brilliant. I should revisit it.

The conversations in THE SEVENTH SEAL between the Knight and Death are extremely thought-provoking.

Seventh Seal is a great thought provoking film along with most of Bergman's films. I really like Scenes from a Marriage and 1969's 'the Rite' Sometimes i notice in a Woody Allen film the dialogue can begin to reach into 'Bergman land' but only in his better films (like the ones with diane keaton and mia farrow)

Apocalypse Now, Gods Must Be Crazy, Pi, Saving Grace (1985), Milagro Beanfield War, Never Cry Wolf, just to name a few.

While it's not the same kind of film as MDwA or Waking Life, I thought that American Beauty had some thought-provoking elements, and in general I just like the film.

I've only seen Seventh Seal once, but from that viewing, I think the movie is overrated in terms of its philosophical content, because while it does have some interesting ideas, especially regarding existentialism, I just didn't respond to Seventh Seal with the same level of intellectual excitement that I felt when watching MDwA.
