I can't believe anyone thinks this is better than AAWiL...

I'm exaggerating, but seriously, the effects are laughable and the characters' actions make no sense, even for a horror movie.

It looks like someone saw An American Werewolf in London, it blew their skirt up with its awesomeness so they decided to try to do the same thing (in terms of effects) but kinda failed. I don't think the work here is even comparable.

This is not the worst movie ever or anything like that and it has a decent cast, some of them are kickass but it is second rate when it comes to story and makeup. I'm sure I'll upset people who love it but I just don't get it...

To each their own. I can't believe anyone would question taste.

I like both and I like them both equally as horror films however I always go back to "The Howling" because it is far more bone-chilling.

An American Werewolf In London
is simply put, not scary in the least. Even when I saw it as a child - I was 10, I laughed hard at it but it never once scared me. The Howling on the other hand, scared the bejezus out of me and I still consider it far scarier. It is darker, more ominous and I even prefer this transformation scene to the more polished one in AWIL simply because, this one is far more grotesque and gruesome. AWIL is gorier, but not scary.

Still love them both though and prefer these practical effects and transformation scenes a million times over the CGI created crap-fests thrown at us from Hollywood throughout the last 2 decades.

I actually don't think either are very good movies, to be honest. I have watched both twice now, both when they came out and both more recently, and I must say my original thoughts about them held up. I always thought American Werewolf was vastly over rated, and when it finally looks like it might pick and get fun an interesting, it's over way too soon. The Howling, well, I couldn't exactly remember if I had seen it, and I watched the whole thing still not knowing if I had, only to remember the last scene as being the most interesting and memorable. I saw tons of movies around the time this came out, and some I can remember scene by scene, without seeing them again. This one had literally been erased from my mind except for that last scene, which is not a good sign. I thought the whole premise was ridiculous and the acting pretty sub par, and Dee Wallace was not good in it at all.
