Barbara Hershey's performance

Barbara Hershey's performance in the film is brillant, from beginning to end!
All the various feelings she shows in the film...fear, despair, strength...an incredible actress!

Agreed whole heartedly! Ms. Hershey is a brilliant actress, and her performance in this picture, and the way she handled it was so classy and brave. As Ellen Burstyn was nominated for The Exorcist, so too, should Barbara have been at least nominated for this.

When will you ever learn, this feeling is all you can discern?

She is great in this movie.

She was incredible in this movie. She's pretty much the only reason we're still interested in this movie.

The direction, cinematography and soundtrack are effective too, in my opinion, but THE ENTITY would have been less effective without Barbara Hershey's wonderful performance.

At around 49:30 when the therapist is leaving her house the first time, she is looking at him at first as someone she trusts, then there is a hint of lust/attraction, then a look of loneliness, followed by fear. All in about 5 seconds time. It is the single most amazing acting I have ever seen without any movement, it all takes place in her eyes.

reply

Agreed. Hershey was outstanding in this film.

I am the Duke of IMDb bio writers! I am A#1!

She is really good in this. The film is really intriguing, but her performance is a cut above.

Barbara needs to be more recognized for this movie. It was a great, remarkable performance.

Close your eyes, give me your hand...

Yes, her performance in this movie is nothing short of superb. It's a big reason this is one of the best horror movies of all time. She made it so you could feel sorry for the character and root for her to overcome this rather than be a victim.

reply

She was superb in this film.

Yup. And one of the sexiest women in movies for at least three decades (consider most women in Hollywood have a shelf life of about five years). In 1982, I would have given my left foot to be the meat in a Barbara Hershey / Beverly D'Angelo sandwich.

Rewatched this last night for the first time in God knows how many years. Terrific performance.

She really was great in this. Also the production values were solid. An underrated movie that doesn't get talked about all that much, I guess 'a woman getting raped by a ghost' is a hard sell for some people but it's better than it has any right to be.

reply

True. I actually saw it in the cinema when it first came out. Thought it was just okay then. I came to appreciate it more over the years,

She was great in this. I hadn't seen it since high school, so it was good to revisit. I thought Ron Silver was very good as well.

reply

Agree on Silver. He always seemed to play tightly-wound guys. I don't ever remember seeing him play someone who was chilled! πŸ˜„

reply

He was almost always intense. It would have been funny to try and see him pill of a chill character. I remember on The West Wing he was a bit more relaxed. I don't remember him ever getting very animated and yelling.
