Charles Durning's performance

So I just watched DNOTS for the first time and I was suprised at how top notch the performances were and of special note, Charles Durning, who else thought he really rose to the occasion and elevated the movie? You really get a sense of him drifting deeper and deeper into madness and depravity.

I was always impressed by his performance here - even more so seeing this one back to back with 'O Brother Where Art Thou?'. The white-suited fat Southern politician is generally played negatively, but he made 'Pappy' funny and even likeable!

I was amazed at how much he made us HATE Hazelrigg, even from the first moment we see him watching Bubba and Marylee.

I agree with you. The exact moment I saw that expression on his face I knew I wasn't going to like him. It takes a very good actor to do that.

Burn, witch! Burn, witch! Burn! Burn! Burn!

Unforgivable performance. Hate the man, want him to get justice, he's conceited, afraid, scared, pathetic, stupid, a bully, and totally unaware of what is going on.

There aren't enough words to describe Durning here. Hated this movie when I first saw it because of the scary scarecrow, but now it is a total Durning piece of work.
