what happened to valerie? is her dissapearance explained in the book? she goes from being a central character to vanishing without explanation

uncovered the mystery and read the book which is also quality and very different to film. Valerie is freaked out after cutter's house is burned down and assuming cord is behind it deserts cutter

I wondered this, too. I saw this on TV, so I thought maybe a key scene had been edited out. Very weird how she just vanishes.

Like someone else suggested, my guess is that they probably filmed a scene explaining Valerie's disappearance and left it on the cutting room floor. Probably for the better. The actress that played her was lousy. She was better as dopey teenage sharkbait in Jaws 2.
