Other movies that end this way?

Obviously plenty of movies end with someone getting shot, but I'm trying to think of movies where that's the absolute end. BANG! The end.

The only other ones I can think of off the top of my head are "Elite Squad" and "The French Connection II."

Others?

If think the Soprano's ends with Tonys death then that might be considered similar. However, that doesn't even have a BANG! Just END!

In some ways, though not with the bang, I was reminded of Jacob's Ladder. I'd certainly recommend that fans of either one try the other. Another one is The French Connection.

Resevoir Dogs. Several bangs (I think). One to Tim Roth's head via Harvey Keitel and the policemen shooting Keitel.

Easy Rider was a good call but not altogether BANG...the end. I believe there's a pullback shot that eventually turns into an aerial shot of the wreckage. Just as haunting an ending as Cutter's Way though, maybe even more so in that Cutter was prepared and very willing to die for his ambiguous (but probably dead on) cause but Fonda and Hopper were trying their best to enjoy life and were gunned down for no reason other than their appearance, the same thing that happened to Nicholson on the film.

Cutter's way was unique in that the BANG ending could have meant so much more. Was the bad guy killed or wounded? Probably killed but not specified (the book may have expounded here). Was he the bad guy at all? Quite likely but there's no confession, no arrest made, no trial (again, going by the movie). Was Jeff Bridges perhaps cleared of the charges or killed by security? Probably killed but because two men held the gun, one of them dead, it could have been a struggle to get the gun that resulted in Alex shooting JJ Cord. A martyr's end, though it is Alex who was truly martyred. Almost as if Bone felt so horribly about Mo and his alleged responsibility for her death. Many times, the entire situation is alluded to being or directly called "Alex's imagination."

Vietnam was not imaginary, nor was the mental anguish that many veterans like Alex faced afterward. Alex's war was not over. He had an ax to grind with the rich and powerful who did much more than murder hitch-hiking teenagers. On a small level, JJ Cord was representative of every rich person pulling the strings of that war, those responsible for sending unwilling soldiers to die while they themselves, true believers in the war, never fired a single round. That is what makes Alex's life tragic but triumphant, even dressed up in a suit and tie, riding in to save the day on a majestic white steed.

This is where I think the ambiguity comes in full-force. Was Cutter's white knight ride into victory victorious at all? Even if one believes that Cutter is right in his investigation, he dies before knowing whether or not his best friend has grown the balls to take a stand and pull the trigger.

Actually the book also has a BANG ending but quite different - darker and sadder then the film...if you can imagine such a thing.

Cop (1988) starring James Woods ends with a BANG! Well, three of them.

Last lines of the that movie. For those who haven't seen it and may want it to, spoiler below

Woods (Talking to the killer): Good news is you're right, I'm a cop and so I gotta take you in. Bad news is I've been suspended & I don't give a f*&k!... *fires three shots into the killer* Woods cocks his shotgun and the screen fades to black

Funny enough, The Package(1989), in which John Heard played a shady colonel, ends with an actual bang. Good movie too.

These are great reminders. I had forgotten about Videodrome ending with the single gunshot, even though I love that movie. "Long live the new flesh."

I'm looking forward to seeing The Package for the first time. I just added it to my Netflix Instant Watch queue. Now I just have to get my wireless internet working again...

Three that immediately come to mind are :

1) BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (Loads of guns shooting at them !)

2) THE PARALLAX VIEW (Warren Beatty being shot by mysterious shadowy man)

and the last shot of GOODFELLAS is one of Joe Pesci shooting straight at the audience ...

"Dr Strangelove" ends with rather a big bang. Although again there's a bit of a coda afterwards, so it doesn't fit the brief.

I thought of "Reservoir Dogs" when I saw this yesterday and decided Tarantino had probably nicked the ending.

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.
