For all of you people out there saying, "That movie sucked and had no redeeming intellectual value whatsoever," I have a newsflash for you: IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE ANY REDEEMING VALUE! It's just stupid stuff that's freaking hilarious. Mindless stuff. Dennis Quaid peeing ice? Ringo drawn with a small head and huge schnoz? THE CLAY-MATION DINOS?! Yeah, yeah, not sophisticated at all. And don't get me wrong, I love sophisticated comedy--I look at the crap they have out today and I weep (Half Baked? Please. I'm laughing, but for all the wrong reasons). But this thing is funny.
I was about 30 when this film came out, and I saw it on HBO. Every time it was on, I generally watched it (when my work schedule allowed). I continued watching it whenever it showed up. I taped it and have watched it many more times.
I just found it on YouTube and paused while I came here to read what people have to say. I've bookmarked it so that I can revisit it as often as I feel like I need many laughs.
I've always felt that this film was very clever, not stupid comedy like so many of them from the mid-Nineties onward. Using "Bolero" might seem obvious when you watch it, but it's really a terrific choice, what with the meaning of the music and its use in the equally messy attempt at lovemaking in "10" with Dudley Moore and Bo Derek. I love all of the sight gags, from the sun plummeting and the moon popping up with appropriate sound effects to the dino-coyote howling at the moon; from the made-up and very understandable language to the fantastic comic performances from everyone. What a cast they have! I especially love the impromptu music and song around the fire as well as the hilariously dopey dinosaurs! I cannot fault one moment in this crazy film, one of the best comedies I've seen. At 60+, I've seen a lot of those, and this is in my top favorites, along with "Harvey", "Cat Ballou", "Once Bitten", "After the Fox" and "Some Like It Hot".
Without a doubt, I'm at well over 50 viewings, perhaps as much as 75, and I'll keep watching it and laughing!

I second every word of your post Myst. There is so much to love. Ringo, became my favorite Beatle.
let me add one to the list.. Blazing saddles. Another great one to be with on a deserted island
I love the scene: Tonda, searching under-water for Lana, surfacing with a crab pinched to his left nostril. Crab tug-o-war. Just a claw dangles, still in a death pinch..
Now I'm torn, do I pop in Blues Brothers.. or Caveman, for this afternoons entertainment.. no, wait..or Spinal tap.. decisions..
You forgot "All You Need is Cash", the story of The Rutles. This is a parody of "The Complete Beatles". See The Beatles movie first for best understanding. AYNiC might be the best parody in the history of film.
I have yet to see any mention of other Ringo movies. The Magic Christian with Peter Sellers, and Blindman, a parody of old westerns, are at least as good. He was in many other movies but these were the only ones that he was the star (no pun intended) or costar...I think.
It did have redeeming historical value. We learned how man first stood erect. We also learned how fire, music, weapons, cooking, and other things first came about.
I almost forgot that this is when the first war happened and why. It was all about women, not money
