Worth a watch?
Any fans of this flick?
shareOne of the 10/10 low-budget '80s horror movies I gave.
shareOh shit son what up, a full 10/10???
It's that good? What other horror movies would you compare this to?
I remember having lots of fun while watching this movie. The special makeup and atmosphere were fantastic.
shareI haven’t seen this either. Your really pumping this up with a 10/10, so I’ll add it to the watch list.
shareI watched this last night.
Strengths;
- Superb location. A little snowy blue collar mining town. Shot on locations in Utah in the winter of 1980 I presume. A 'winter horror' to be watched alongside other snowy horror films like The Shining, The Thing and Black Christmas.
- Great cast. A lot of praise for the cast in this one and I see why, they're quite likable and relatable. They have a degree of maturity to them that is absent in other 80s horror casts. They're not your typical teen shitheads.
- A Bichon Frisé called Tiger is an absolute devil, great dog actor.
It doesn't contain a lot of gore, nor a lot of nudity but just enough of both to scratch those itches. You don't see the monsters much at all and some would say it's cheap looking when shown. The budget definitely shows in this regard.
I've seen someone call it My Bloody Valentine meets Tremors. I can understand why as it's a monster movie with a rustic blue-collar location and atmosphere similar to MBV. Though it probably doesn't rise to the levels of either of those films.
It's a solid little film. Fans of low budget 1980s horror films are likely to enjoy this to some degree.
I'd give it a 7/10.
These reviews on the wikipedia page hit the nail on the head;
A charming little homespun monster movie, it's a far cry from many of its gooey, splattery contemporaries, and it's armed with a solid cast that makes it personable in the absence of an abundance of on-screen carnage. All told, a pretty good flick was mined from the old monster movie standard.
Charmingly clunky. Plays like a cross between the then-omnipresent slasher films and a '50s monster movie.
A charming, if sedate mishmash of horror genres and tropes. 'The Boogens' small, intimate cast is surprisingly solid, and its characters are likable. Despite the low budget, the sets and effects are solid.share
