Well, Body Heat is essentially like Basic Instinct with a brain. And it´s actually more moody & better shot even though the atmospherics is more or less the only thing Verhoeven´s little piece of exploitation gets right. Whereas BI is sleazy, ludicrous and overall little more than tarted up soft porn, Body Heat constitutes a worthy successor to top drawer classic noirs.

Basic Instinct is a lot easier on the eyes. It's hard to believe that Turner and Hurt were presumably considered extremely attractive in the early 80's. (I guess standards were a lot lower then, before personal trainers and greater nutritional knowledge.) And Sharon Stone is simply incredibly beautiful.
Basic Instinct also obviously had better production values. Far more money spent on it, I'm sure, and advanced filming techniques, etc. Much better cinematography.
But Body Heat is simply a more thoughtful, interesting story.
Are you kidding? Kathleen Turner was stunning in her prime. She was an international sex symbol because of this film... so it's very easy to see why she was considered attractive in the 80's. And Hurt wasn't so bad either.

I was young and naïve at the time but I recall being blown away by her transformation in “Romancing the Stone” (which I saw before “Body Heat”)
Sharon Stone was impossible to make look bad back then
Re: this thread though, it’s very much a matter of taste, but “Basic Instinct” was very much a Verhoeven film: crass, graphic and brazen but executed with slick intensity
I’d add the same about “Fatal Attraction,” such a distinctively stylish Adrian Lyne production that it’s hardly worth comparing to the other two
But “Body Heat” is still considered THE definitive new-noir, and I’m definitely on that bandwagon

I would take Turner in Body Heat over Stone in Basic Instinct. But not over Stone in Total Recall.

shareBI is trashy soft porn with some gory violence. It’s thoroughly entertaining and well shot by the great Paul Verhoeven, but Body Heat is the smarter film that stays with you longer, and is a better attempt at a ‘modern noir’.
