To this day I don't understand the 'Stay off the Moores' warning.

The werewolf wouldn't attack them on the road? Seems to me he can go anywhere he pleases.

Not sure why but I came to the conclusion when I first watched this that the werewolf didn't like the smell of the road or something (fumes and oil and such), and the locals had somehow pieced together that it avoided it.

...then whoa, differences...

It's not like the werewolf wouldn't have attacked them. He would've attacked them regardless of a road. However, the two guys were wandering off the road not just for a few minutes, but for quite a time. The movie just makes it feel like they sidetracked for a few minutes and that was their demise, but no they actually walked deep into the moors and e.g. the scenes of them running from one place to another when the wolf was hunting them was probably a hunt of 20 minutes in real life or something like that. So they were deep into the moors and those moors were the hunting grounds of the werewolf. That's why the villagers also warned them to "stay clear off the moors" and you do this best by "following the road"

You may be over thinking this one.

Since we know little to nothing about the werewolf in the village, we can only assume. So here's my assumption:

One of the villagers became a werewolf. He was likely aware of it, just as David was. If that is the case and he couldn't kill himself, one probability is that during full moons, he went deep into the moors to get his fill killing wildlife, rather than his fellow villagers.

Maybe the villagers knew that's what he was doing - they obviously knew he was out there.

The moors posed a danger a) because you can easily get lost and b) during full moons, the werewolf is hunting there.

My more poignant question would be on their other piece of advice: how to you avoid the full moon?? LOL =)

They don't tell them to avoid the full moon.

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

They say "beware the moon", not "avoid" the moon.

Don't put the devil in the picture, cause' the religious groups won't wanna see it.

Of course not, it was a BS warning, and the villagers knew it too. They just wanted to get rid of the strangers at first, but then after feeling guilty they finally decided to kill the werewolf.

There are also superstitions about crossroads, worth considering when you've got pentagrams on walls!

It's a well know fact that werewolves hate roads and avoid them at all costs. Have you ever seen a werewolf on a road? That's what I thought.
