Did this freak anyone else out as a small child?

my parents rented this for me when i was 5 or 6, thinking, "hey, it's a Disney movie, it can't be that scary." i was afraid to look into mirrors for YEARS. it's good fun now, though, if not a bit early-80's cheezy.

reply

Yeah, that was one creepy kids movie. Does anyone by chance remember another Disney spooky flick from the early '80s. It featured the song "Freir-a-sjock-a" (I don't know French, sorry) and a doll of some sort. I can't remeber the name of it and it is driving me mad.

I started watching this when I was about 3 (yes, my parents are weird, as I grew up with a steady diet of horror films) and it scared me so much, but even so I apparently demanded to watch it over and over again (about 5 times) in one day. This movie will always be special to me.

reply

xfinklex, i believe you are talking about a movie called "Child of Glass", also a Disney ghost mystery from the late 70's. it's the only one i can think of that contained the song "Frere Jacques."

reply

I do believe that is the one I am thinking of. I will have to try and rent it. Thanks for the info, it was really starting to bug me not knowing.

reply

Good luck trying to find it; it was obscure even when it was made (do you remember a theatrical release? i always got the impression when i watched it that it was a "Wonderful World of Disney" tv-movie). If you track town a copy of it, let me know.

reply

I first saw it when I was about 4, my older sisters made me watch it. Ever since then we've had running jokes about some of the lines in it. It was only until it popped through my letter box yesterday that I realised how much we'd distorted them over the past 20 odd years.

I don't remember it freaking me out, but having watched it yesterday, it probably should have. Little girls getting possesed and all that.

I was gutted the DVD didn't have the alternate ending on though.

reply

AHHH this is great. I completely forgot about this movie until somebody mentioned it on another board. And, yes, this movie scared the crap out of me when I saw it for the first time, maybe when I was six...

But then I developed this weird masochistic relationship with it... I rented it all the time...

What was it that was written on the mirror again?????

reply

Was it "must do again tomorrow" that was written on the mirror?

And who could forget when Jan looks at the barn window, and her little sister has written "Karen" from the other side in the dust?

reply

The new DVD came out yesterday! I haven't gotten it yet, but the extra features on Amazon.com indicate that it has "alternate endings." Has anyone gotten this new release of it yet?

reply

Yes, this movie scared the crap out of me. I saw it when I was about 8 (late 80s, early 90s), at summer camp on a rainy day. The camp used a nearby church on rainy days and we were watching it in an upper room, which was scary to begin with. I remember getting so scared that they had to take me back downstairs. They used the back staircase, which of course freaked me out even more.

Now I don't remember being scared of mirrors after watching it, but I might not have gotten that far. I was however afraid of my back yard. We lived on about an acre, half of which was covered by woods. From the time I saw the movie until I was 13, I kept the blinds that faced the woods closed (even during the day), and I wouldn't go in the back yard alone. I was never afraid of the dark before that, and actually needed to sleep in the complete dark, but after that I needed to have a nightlight. I'm still a little freaked when I'm in the woods at night. Thanks a lot Disney!!!

Oh man, I rented this from our local small-town video store when I was about 6 years old, and it scared me so bad I had to sleep in my parent's room for a week. This movie truly terrified me, but I loved it at the same time, so I'd watch it over and over - and be scared over and over. It didn't help much either that I lived in the middle of the woods.

Now that I've gotten older, I bought the Anchor Bay DVD and watched it again, and while it's not as scary as it was 10 years ago, it's still quite a good movie. I still enjoy it to this day, it brings back a lot of memories.

As a child, this movie was truely fightening. I too was scared of mirrors and all that. In fact, I was so frightened by this movie that I refused to watch it again until about twenty years later, my wife (who's about 6 years younger and hadn't seen it) picked it up off the shelf at the local library. I told her it was the freakiest thing I ever saw. She loves horror films and insisted on renting it. I said "No! I'm not whatching that freaky movie again!" Which made her insist even more.

Eventually, we checked it out. The whole time, my wife laughed and made fun of me for ever being scared. I tried to explain that to a six year old, WITW is terrifying, but she just laughed and laughed. The alternate ending with the alien was actually pretty funny though... although it might have freaked me out as a child, who knows?

Is this film any good?

I never saw this movie and until fairly recently had forgotten all about it. I do remember a scene from the trailer at that time where Karen(?) is standing in darkness, blindfolded, with a single light source shining down on her. This has always piqued my curiousity. I also remember when The Watcher came out (Keanu Reeves) and wondering if it was related at all. Unfortunately I have never seen WitW on cable tv :( Guess I'm going to have to buy it...

I saw it for the first time tonight, and I'm 21.

In the 21st century, it's unlikely to scare anyone over the age of about 12, but it's certainly atmospheric and mysterious enough to keep the viewer watching.

Of course, I got it mainly because Lynn-Holly Johnson is such a cutee, but it looked interesting anyway.

Bit disapointed I only have the crummy region 2 version with no commentary or alternate ending/s though.

I don't think anyone will get scared by this over the age of 10. When I was 5 I made my mom let me watch this, and damn did I get scared. Especially the fun-house scene. But like others have mentioned, I kept watching it over and over until I forgot about it, and then had the chance to see it again at about 14. I thought it was crap. Oh well.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!

Well it's three years later and I finally saw the movie. It's pretty good, and knowing what I was like as a kid it probably would have freaked me out. I'm glad I saw it though, it was a good mystery. Now if only Disney could release Mr. Boogedy and Child of Glass on DVD and I'll be happy.

lol yea,my mom used to let me watch all the scary movies like the exorcist, amityville horror stuff like that.but none of those ever really scared me at all. this one freaked me out a bit,but i loved it,it was awesome,i cant find it anywhere now tho,i wish i could.i think it depends on the child as to weather or not it will scare the crap of you or not.i was used to watching scary stuff,so it was just really eerie to me.and no i didnt grow up to be a homicidal maniac or anything cuz my mom let me watch these movies,i just love horror movies now. i let my children watch some, not all cuz movies now days are about being naked and tons of blood, the movies i watched back then didnt have those elements. only one of my children likes to watch them, the other 3 dont want to have anything to do with it,thats their choice,so they dont have to watch, but the oldest, the one that likes to watch them,he thought this movie was great when we watched it online,he wants me to buy it but i cant find it anywhere.
