Ok, so I get that Kenny dressed up as the magician's assistant. But this leaves a few things unexplained.
1. What happened to the REAL assistant? She was definitely there in the beginning of the movie, when the train is being boarded, and we see her again later after the train has been evacuated, talking to Ken. I'm POSITIVE that isn't Kenny...the hair is different, and so is the voice. It's definitely a woman...but I don't see this character listed in this movie's credits.
2. How did the magician not know that was an impostor? There are a few times when Kenny (dressed up as the assistant) and the magician interact, during their magic acts, and there are no signs that Ken notices anything is wrong.
I know this thread is old, but here's my two cents.
Back to the original questions - what happened to the original assistant and why didn't the magician know she was an impostor.
Remember - no one on the train hired the magician. Doc doesn't know why they are there. It's all part of Kenny's plan - he would have hired the magician, and part of the deal being that he would be/provide the assistant. I doubt the magician knew much of Kenny's plans, he might not even know he is a man, but he knew there was some ulterior motive for being there. He gives her a few distrustful glances throughout the film. When you think that he is the killer, these can be interpreted as aloof "I'm secretly the killer" looks, but in retrospect they can be seen as "Oh *beep* what's she really planning" looks.
So, he doesn't notice anything wrong with her earlier because from his point of view there isn't anything wrong. He was hired to perform magic with her for the kids on the train, and until people start dying, that's what he does.
It is the same actor playing the assistant and male killer. If you notice, they never shoot the assitant up close. In fact most of her scences seem to be with David Cooperfield in the fore-front.
When I was younger - and living in Plattsburgh NY, we went to the theatre to see this movie - even at that age, I loved slasher movies and more - JLC - but after the movie ended the manager of the theatre announced that the man playing the killer had been watching the film with us. I believe he is from Montreal and the film hadn't premiered there yet, so he drove down to Plattsburgh to see. I don't think they did the red carpet premieres then. He stayed in the lobby and answered questions and signed autographs. Very nice guy. But still kind of creepy knowing that the guy who played the killer in the movie you were watching was sitting behind you in a dark movie theatre.

I was wondering the same thing as the OP, and this is the only post that answered the original question, thank you!
