Worth repeated viewings

Almost every scene in this film contains layers upon layers of subtle humor that can easily fly by you the first time you see it. For instance, watch closely at the beginning when Popeye arrives in Sweethaven and takes a stroll through the town. Everyone is fascinated and frightened by him. When he strolls by the barber shop, four guys poke their heads out and hum as a barber shop quartet. There are countless absurdities like that strewn throughout the movie, and most of them are funny. I never get tired of watching Popeye for this reason. It's a brilliant and highly underrated film made during a brief moment in film history when, thankfully, the inmates were running the asylum.

Definitely. Altman brought his densely detailed direction and gave us a charming live action cartoon with good-natured humor and pleasantly absurd moments. Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall are perfectly cast.

Thanks Fred. Always good to know there's the likes of you out there.

I agree. I saw this film for the first time today and wondered "Why is this so good?" I found the supper scene fascinating and kept watching from there. I saw Robert Altman directed and was like "ok now I get it." He elevated the material immensely!

I agree. No one could've made this parfait except Robert Altman.
