a real meteorite or one of those probe droids?

I'm fairly certain they meant prone, as in prone to self-destructing.

It's called a "probe droid." Leia's exact line is "An Imperial Probe Droid."

The probe droid landed at the very beginning of the movie. It then began moving and scanning.

This all happened before we saw Luke ride by on his tauntaun. Luke really did see a meteorite.

I was thinking about that.

The better sequence would have been:

- Opening text crawl.
- Star destroyer launches the probes.
- We follow one probe which goes to Hoth.
- Luke Skywalker is riding along and sees the 'meteor' hit the ground, speaks on the radio to Han.
- The wampa attacks him and drags him away.
- We close in on the 'meteor' site and the probe droid comes out - ominous music.

Then we know for sure what happened.

Agreed. I use to wonder the same thing ... was that the Probe Droid and Luke just thought it was a meteorite?
