Did anyone else take Judge Smails characters side over Al Czerviks?

Judge Smails was basically the son of co founder of the club and had been running things for a long time and was also a judge, used to doing things a certain way with class, he also offered to sponsor the kid and gave him a job cutting his grass.

Then Al Czervik comes into his club and acts like a douche, violating club rules and being rude, screwing with his golf game on purpose, offending a lot of people for no reason, hes just a big jackass the entire time, never liked his character and rudeness, just a bum that is rich.

So i actually took Judge Smails characters side because it was his club and lifestyle, this slob comes in and ruins his club and makes his life hell for no reason, could have easily told him to leave if he was not a member yet, basically fair too, Al Czervik was just a POS that was making trouble and being an a-hole, should have called the police after the boat accident and had him arrested.

As a kid I took Al's side because he was funny, but as an adult I have to side with the judge.

I would agree with that.

I think there's a very similar dynamic at play in how the Democratic party loses a lot of its constituents to the Republicans.

Speaking of douches, I found Danny the biggest one of all, especially after Smails' favorable treatment of him. I didn't need the Danny-Lacey thing either...too forced.

Agree with OP, watching the scene now where Czervik is tearing around in the boat. And agree with this post..

Of course most folks root for Al. He's the hero, and the Judge is the villain.

However I do side with the judge on the bogus substitution of Danny, a really good golfer, for Al a complete duffer.
That was unfair. The Judge should have said "No substitutions."

But then the movie wouldn't have been as funny.

The judge is a liar, cheat, abusive, a cheap-skate and a racist.

I'll take a jackass like Al any day over a hypocritical jerk like the judge.

Just for the record, Ty was the son of the co-founder. His dad co-founded it with the judge.

Either way, that doesn't give the judge the right to be such an a-hole. He knows he could be facing criminal charges for throwing his putter like that, but instead of standing up and admitting his stupidity, allows a teenager to take the blame.

"I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. I didn't want to do it. I felt I owed them."

reply

The only thing I'll say to that is that really has nothing to do with Al's behavior. Al simply started acting like a douche, insulting people without knowing them. Think of the events from the perspective of a disinterested third party. All we see is the judge trying to enjoy a golf game and Al starts shouting at him, which even players on a public course would have issues with. He then starts playing music very loud on the course, another violation that no course, public or private would allow.

Frankly they both are guilty of being jerks. As someone else in this topic said, the Judge is a racist and not only that refuses to give money to help poorer people. Then again, Al also doesn't exactly strike me as one who gives to the poor either. He also as the TC points out acts very rudely to a lot of people through out the movie. But truth be told the writers of this film intentionally made both of of them and other characters in the film snobs. So yeah. They are both snobs and that's intentional on the filmmakers. So truth be told I don't side with either. They can both go suck a bag of rocks for all I care.

Judge Smails cheats at golf. He does not like taking responsibility for his actions when injuring a woman with a thrown club. He threatens to bring legal actions against a construction site near the club for the presence of gophers. He treats the club staff like crap.

That said, Czervik is a mess and causes many problems. :)
