Another "Classic" comedy.

With bland, barely humorous jokes. It was definitely not PC, I will give it that. Abortion jokes, pedophile jokes, suicide jokes, blacks speak incomprehensibly jokes etc.

Comedies didn't truly become funny until about the early to mid 90s. There may have been some decent movies that were comedies before that, but they were not laugh out loud uncontrollably funny.

Surely you cant be serious?

Don’t call me Shirley

reply

Shhiiiittt (golly)

reply

I am. And don't call me "You"!

reply

Comedy like everything is subjective. I happen to think Airplane is hilarious 😂

We had thicker skin back then and didn't get uptight if a joke was "offensive".

Airplane is not PC - that's a good thing!

reply

that was the best thing about it. Still the humor is just pretty mundane. I don't think as much was allowed back then. Then came the PC crackdown. So humor had a small window of freedom around 1992 to 2010.

reply

What are some comedies from the early to mid-90s on that you think are funnier than the earlier comedies?

reply

Every Chris Farley movie. Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey movies from the 90s. Freddy Got Fingered. Team America. Borat movies. Macgruber. Hell, even Master of Disguise was funnier than 70s and 80s comedies.

reply

I quote Kurt Cobain: "I wish I was like you / easily amused..."

reply

Yes, the highbrow comedy of Airplane and Caddyshack is just so far beyond my comprehension...Or it's just dull as hell.

reply

I dont think I could name a Chris Farley movie , And isnt FGF generally regarded as an inane ass humour low point in comedy history? ( i dont know i havent seen it, just what i heard )
never heard of "Master of Disguise " either
Borat is just cringe comedy
Team America just gets by on shock value rather than comedy
only the Top 15% of sandler movies are funny

Jim Carrey is the only good example there .

reply

I disagree. Mortal Kombat is a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the greatest video game of all time.

reply

"There's a Donkey Kong kill screen coming up" !

reply

The funniest part of this movie was when one of the airport guys had some kind of graph and said "What can you make of this?" and the gay airport guy grabbed it and started doing origami.

reply

Yeah, that guy was funny 😅

Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue!!

reply

The terrorists walking through the metal detectors unstopped and then the Nun getting accosted.

"Step aside, I speak Jive"

Then in Airplane II, "You're putting yourself in Jeopardy", then show Art Fleming in front of the Jeopardy! board on the shuttle

I think you have to be a troll, but just in case...

Humor is subjective. I find the comedies of the '90s, especially the ones you reference, mediocre, and think Airplane is much funnier, and more intelligently written. I think the funniest comedy films ever made were made in the 1920s, '30s, and '40s.

Maybe you're being honest, and find Chris Farley or Adam Sandler comedies "laugh out loud uncontrollably funny," but I find them "sit in stone-faced silence wondering what kind of person would find this funny."

If you are being serious, and not trying to stir up debate, then so be it. No one can help what they find funny or unfunny.

reply

Very funny for it's time.

It was released in 1980. Not that it was so much better in 1980, but with no doubt, people were a lot less uptight.

SO, yes, the humor the OP spoke of was there. It didn't bother anyone, back then.

It was very popular, with adults and, well, what we were then, kids.
