Was this a made-for-television movie?

Because it is so bad and so poorly made that I think that it must be. I mean really.

reply

No....the movie is 30 years old and now seems a little dated. You must be young becasue movies always evolve and change with acting styles and filming technics. You just need to see more movies from the 70's and see what I'm saying. This movies was great in the late 70's and shows a little wear, but still enjoyable.

reply

No, you are wrong. I have seen plenty of movies from the 70s. Many of them are not as terrible as this movie. Don't blame the decade in which it was made for its lousiness.

reply

Are you kidding? Maybe you should watch movies for acting, plot twists and thrills. Since there isn't an xbox 360 game about it, I'm sure you think it sucks. There weren't very many special effects in the 70's along with completely different acting styles and filming techniques. By today's standards it used antiquated hardware and techniques, NO computers and OPTICAL effects, not digital effects. This movie is not Gone with the Wind but it doesn't suck either. Just look at the film's rating. You'll see you are all alone.

reply

What the hell you are talking about?

The acting is perfect!!!!! HG Well got arrested by police scene was very believable. It felt like he was literally going to collapse.

I would in no way blame the decade for a movie being bad. There were many excellent movies made in the seventies as in all decades. What I would blame is you for having bad taste in movies. This film is very well done, has an interesting plot and good actors. What it doesn't have is what most younger kids are used to..blood and gore, predictable villians, vapid girls who do stupid things to get themselves killed and bare breats. I suspect tht's what you're used to watching.

The fact you say "No, you are wrong" instead of "I disagree" speaks volumes of your arrogance in believing your opinion is fact.

I know you said it two years ago, but I'll bet your attitude hasn't changed since then.

You simply disliked the film, and it's ok to dislike a film. Just don't preach to people and assume that you are always right, and that others who disagree are wrong.

You need to reread the thread. He is saying the person is wrong for making the assumption that he has not seen many movies for the 70s.

Just don't preach to people and assume that you are always right,

You might want to try your own advice before dispensing it.

Just ignore the OP, who is a loser and has no taste in film what so ever.

Bad? In what way? Poorly made? In what way? I mean really.

I agree - this movie bored me to tears, and I like many types of films from various eras. And for the rest of you, one of the basic rules of arguing as an adult is you defend your opinion, not make personal attacks on your opponent.

Uh, yeah. Since the OP, followed by you, are the ones opening up the "argument," perhaps you'd care to actually defend your opinion? "Bored me to tears" is your personal reaction, not a critique anyone can actually reply to except with, "Thank you for sharing."

It has its moments but it is rather poorly crafted. I was struck by this on a first viewing and then listened to Nicholas Meyer's audio commentary and he said the same thing. He didn't have the filmmaking experience at the time.

"Poorly crafted" can mean so many things! Was the script poorly crafted? If so, in terms of plot, character, dialogue? Was it technically poor in terms of badly recorded sound, bad cinematography? Or did the director make poor choices in terms of what shots to use, how shots were framed, which bits of performances he thought were acceptable (so that he didn't do more takes), etc.? Or was it poorly edited? Or was the sound mixing bad? Was the overall movie confusing, not suspenseful, not emotionally involving?

Without a little more specificity, "poorly crafted" is just a lofty judgment to which no one can reply.

Exactly. It's pseudointellectual posturing. It's something said to create the appearance of having discriminating judgement and good taste without all the tedious work involved of actually having either.

I thought it was super delicious back in 1979 and I still pretty much hold that opinion... yes, it may be a little dated but plenty of movies 30 years old or older are a little dated... doesn't take away from the enjoyment or fun of it for me...

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.

Ditto for me. I haven't gotten a copy on DVD, so I had to watch my lousy
hometaped HBO version (oh, the less than clear copy and fullscreen, yuck)...
but I just love the movie and don't want to get in a war with my fellow film lovers. My favorite McDowell role!

I thought it was amazing. The actors are wonderful, especially Malcolm McDowell but everyone has their opinion. Still, I bet this film has more people that enjoy it instead of people who don't like it. Perhaps Big Momma's House wouldn't be so hard for you to enjoy.
