And the visuals, coupled with Jerry Goldsmith's amazing score, capture the vastness of space in all its beauty and horror like no other installment in the franchise ever did as well.
I agree. It's also one of the few Star Trek movies that's actually good science fiction too. The movies tended to ignore the science theme of the show altogether.
I don't know why Star Trek TMP gets so much hate. About the only thing I hear is that it's a "bad movie," even from Big Bang Theory!
IMO, this is the best of the Star Trek movies. I also don't get the Wrath of Khan, I saw that one long ago and did not care for it at all.
The science in Trek has always been light. Not to say that it's a bad thing, it's probably as sci-fi as you can get without turning people off. Science fiction writing has always had it a bit easier, not having to impress as many people to still be profitable.
