My recommendation maybe is weird, but I found ''Runaway Train'' as the closest example of how an Tarkovsky directed action film would be. It's directed by Tarkovsky's ex-colleague, Konchalovsky.

Even though at first there may seem no similarities at all, but there are more than many Tarkovsky moments. And the ending especially. It really felt almost like a true Tarkovsky.

I would recommend it, if only because to see what a movie would approximately look like if Tarkovsky would've made a movie in Hollywood.

(btw, little known fact is that Tarkovsky was searching for work in Hollywood in late 70s. And he was once under consideration to direct Altered States).

Also, I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but the new Wuthering Heights from 2011 is very beautiful, and has a lot in common with Tarkovsky. That movie is definitely worth checking out.

So many of my favorites are mentioned here, but I need to add John Ford's movies, especially b/w are visually beautiful, but my fave of his is "The Grapes of Wrath"... it's Dorothea Lange's depression-era photos come to life. The lighting, especially the scene near the beginning when Tom and Casey are talking to Muley in the Joad's abandoned house lit only with a candle, and a 'duster' howling outside. Pure brilliance.

Morning Patrol is an interesting cult movie, and the director definitely had Stalker in mind when he made it.

Apocalyptic scenery is just simply breathtaking.

From director Sergei Parajanov:

*The Color of Pomegranates
*Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
*The Legend of Suram Fortress

The first one listed I call the single most beautiful film ever made. I suggest looking up first some poetry by Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova, just to get a nice feel for the world about to be opened up in Color of Pomegranates (1968), if you haven't already seen it. As so many others have commented, this really is a great thread!

I'll tell you something if you won't think I'm crazy...I've got grasshoppers taped to my back.
