Decent horror anthology
Screams of a Winter Night won’t win any Oscars, but it is a fun, low-budget 70’s horror anthology. The opening credits sequence is eerie, and then the movie proper begins to build a low-key, but effective, atmosphere. The stories don’t start until about 30 minutes into the film. (I watched the extended version, featuring all four vignettes.) The stories aren’t any great shakes, but they work as intended. As far as which is scariest, I’d go with the 2nd one. The wraparound segments that open and close the movie bring things full circle, and close out the movie with that downbeat feel so prevalent in many films of this era.
Screams of a Winter Night is a movie I’ve wanted to see for a long time, and I’m glad that my first viewing was with the new Blu-ray. It looks great, the camera work is good, and the acting pretty much holds up. If you like low budget filmmaking, with this kind of vibe, you could do a lot worse than Screams of a Winter Night.
