Reason why Fr.Callaghan's crucifix didn't work?

When I saw this as a kid, it scared me because the crucifix didn't work on the "Master", so I felt there was no defense.... lol. But is there any justification for why it didn't work for the Master? I vaguely remember reading something online years ago (I didn't read the book) that the priest was not a holy man, can't remember if he was an alcoholic or a pedophile, so it didn't help him. Any ideas?

Lack of faith, maybe?

reply

yes, in the book it is better explained that he lost his faith.

I loved the way the book handled it.

the whole chapter where SK goes through the residents and the secrets they are hiding may be his best chapter in all his books.

It's one of the most memorable scenes in the book. One that stays with me over a decade after the last time I read it.

Interesting. I have not read the book but I watched the '79 production tonight. Upon reflection, there are two scenes that indicate the priest had lost his faith:

1. When he is first spoken to about the possibility of vampires he says something like, "The Church has shifted its views on evil in recent times . . . evil with a little 'e'. . ." I took that as an indication that he no longer believed in Satan or the overall biblical teaching on evil.

2. When the priest is face to face with Barlow, Straker goads the priest by asking him if he will face Barlow "faith against faith" or something along those lines.

In regard to point #2, I did not really understand what Straker meant, but knowing that the book is explicit about the priest having lost his faith clears a lot up.
