WHAT A MESS!

Bette Midler should buy up EVERY copy of this DRECK and BURN IT! Judging by the POSITIVE posts I'm reading here, is this the SAME "Rose" I just saw on Fox Movie Channel uncut??!! The ONLY way I ended up watching this was to FAST FORWARD my DVR and stop...check if it got better..NOPE..FAST FORWARD AGAIN! The songs in this thing (sans the Title track) are HORRID! Midler's OVER singing/shouting made ME want to shoot HEROIN! WHERE'S MY NEEDLE...WHERE'S MY NEEEEEDLE...AHHHHHH!!! But seriously (?), if you want to see Ms. M, check out Beaches...or...Ruthless People...or...Driving Miss Daisy...or...the X Rated, Driving Miss Daisy CRAZY, no, she AIN'T in those last two, but ANYTHING is better than THIS!

reply

Die please. That was a horrid excuse for a review.

reply

Hee hee..

reply

I think it was valid review. It's refreshing to see different opinions about a movie.

I have tried to like the movie but so far I can't get through it to be able to have a well informed opinion about it. It has it's merits but something about it is really disturbing to me. I guess it's all that underlined in-your-face emotion. Less is often more. Subtlety gets you further with movie making.

reply

Ruthless People WAS a hysterical movie...

reply

Yes it was! Loved it. and for the people who hate The Rose and the "too much" on Bette's acting and singing, well...... she was nominated for Best Actress that year for an Oscar. (Sally Field won) but I think SHE should have won! First time acting? All that real emotion not to mention putting on those concerts as REAL concerts????? Yeah, she should have won!!!!!!!

reply

I totally agree prkinect...She was perfect in that film. Just great. Sally Field was great too, love her, but Bette was just better that year. IMO Sally should have won for a movie she wasn't even nominated for Steel Magnolias. I LOVED her in it and to not even be nominated...Unbelievable.

reply

Yes! Loved her in Steel Magnolias. That scene after her Julia Roberts passed was so unbelievable. I love her in everything but I agree with you, Bette should have taken home the Oscar!

reply

How old are you? 18?
When this movie came out in 1979 it was a huge hit! I still love the songs and the movie is a cult favorite.

reply

abcpc, again, how old are you? What do you listen to? Britney Spears? This is one of the greatest rock movies ever. It epitomized what rock was at one point. Let me tell you as someone who grew up in the music industry, it nailed it.

reply

Er, she only takes heroin at the very end of the movie. It's not like she does it for the entire movie.

And, seriously? You're criticising the songs? That's crazy.

Please don't ever listen to Janis Joplin. Ever.

reply

No offense...but I think YOU GUYS are all on HEROIN! If you think this PUTRID portrayal is anywhere REMOTELY near Janis Joplin!

reply

I think Bette's accting was great but for her Janis impersonaions.. I didn't like that. Stella is will always be my favourite Bette film.

abcpc YOU are POSITIVELY, the MOST irritating AND chidish BASTARD on IMDB!

Like me Mama always said, "Always strive to be the BEST"!

obviously, abcpc, you were at most in diapers when this movie came out. if not, you must have been a disco freak. also, your knowledge of janis joplin is quite limited if you think that midler's portrayal was not on the mark. granted, her acting at times was lacking the perfect levels needed for such an emotional roller coaster and maybe the songs are a bit dated but if one is to review a film they should do a little research into its roots and influences or else it goes from being a review to an uninformed opinion

I'm a big Janis Joplin fan, Ball and Chain is one of my top 5 songs level and I like almost anything she ever sang. But I did not like this movie. Something about Bette Middler's performance did not work for me and I also hated the music in it outside of the title track which is a beautiful song. I tried to like it but I just wasn't into it.

Last Films Seen (first viewing):

Adaptation: 10/10
The Shining: 8/10

reply

Hey. I knew Janis Joplin. And The Rose is no Janis Joplin. (Neither is Bette, but that's okay.)

reply

they arent trying to be janis she was just the insperation for the story. i was 9 when this came out and my mom used to play the cassette in the car all the time, i loved it!!!

reply

I tried to like it too, as I am a fan of Bette Midler. But I just couldn't.
It was slow-paced & relentlessly depressing for one thing, the title character was ridiculous in her inability to stand up for herself at all.
She also constantly looked like she needed to go through a car wash without her car UGH!
The ending was memorable but still not that great. The film just felt flat.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

Sorry I disagree..I think this & Beaches are the best movies she's done so far.
her other movies pale in comparison. She gave 2000% of herself in this movie, how could you NOT see that?

The polarizing reactions people have probably show why she DIDN'T win an oscar. Like Joplin, some love her, some hate her. I think they're very different, but related. Joplin kicks some major butt, but her bands sucked often and she falls apart a lot - and yet, that's what made her Janis, and over production or studio perfection would have ruined her and have been the antithesis of her schtick. Same goes for the Rose.

The original posting is very juvenile and he's obviously a troll. IMDB should at least heavily enforce some decency with postings.

Now, Before you guys start yelling at me...Im 19, and a HUGE Janis fan. I read all the books about her and then found out this movie was based on her life...loosely. Having read "burried alive" I can really see the resmblence between the two stories. Anyway, I just came across this movie a few days ago in the movie store, bought it, and watched it. The first song was wonderful, sounded alot like Janis actually, I loved her screaming. I really like this movie, though it barely keeps my attention. Its kinda of slow paced and drawn out, but good none the less. Bette does an amazing job on the songs, she can really rock it. I wish it was a Janis Bio though, because she sounds alot like her when she's on stage and, but overall i like this movie, not one of my favorites, but I like it.

I just watched the movie and loved it. She can't sing like Janis, but she does a great job of BEING a rock 'n' roll mama. And she holds her own vocally in her own style. She's not supposed to sound perfect, she's supposed to be whacked out on booze. It's the insecurities and alcoholism and drug use that are similar to Janis. I love this film.

reply

well, i didn't like Bett Midler in this. i didn't like Alan Bates in this. maybe it's cause i don't like rock music movies based on real people one can't recreate but desperately try.
