Mac Davis.....

Totally NOT believable as an NFL quarterback.

Love the movie.... but what were they thinking casting him in that roll.

Oh good lord... and the clothes we wore back then. Frightening!

I suspect the character of Seth was based on Don Meredith, since that's who was QB when Peter Gent (who wrote the novel) was playing for the Cowboys. If you've heard Don Meredith talk, you can see why they would cast Mac Davis.

reply

Mac Davis was from Lubbock, and it was probably the Don Meredith accent that got him the job. He wasn't a big guy, but he was scrappy, and does pretty well in the role. I agree, not believable as an NFL quarterback, but the character works. I can still hear that Texas twang when he says "I haven't got to the weird part yet" or "I like to mingle with the little people."

Oakland Raiders QB Kenny Stabler didn't look like QB.
Mac Davis got good reviews from Siskel & Ebert.

According to IMDB, the role was originally offered to Lee Majors, who would have been a better choice. However, Majors turned it down for a different gig.

reply

Imagine how far Lee Majors could have thrown the ball with that bionic arm of his.

reply

Lee Majors would've stunk. He had no comedic touch whatsoever. Davis may not have looked like a QB, but he was hilarious and did a terrific job in my opinion. Probably the best thing about this film is its humor.

While I agree that Mac Davis wasn't the best of choices for the role of Seth Maxell. However, if the final decision was in fact between Mac Davis and Lee Majors? Then I definitely choose Mac Davis for the part.

I also heard that Burt Reynolds was offered the part, but it was at the height of his career, and Burt was starring in 2-3 movies a year at the time. So he was unavailable of course. But, it sure would have been more believable, and thus a more entertaining film had he accepted the part.

Personally I thought Mac Davis was outstanding in the role. He had a relaxed, laid back delivery that suited the character of Seth Maxwell perfectly. Don't know that I could see Lee Majors in the role...IMO the casting was spot on in this movie.

reply

Mac Davis was dandy in the role. Funny with that Texas twang. I can almost hear him singing, "turn out the lights, the party's over...."

reply

Completely agree, Davis was an excellent choice IMO.

reply

I too agree that Mac Davis was an excellent choice. As for him not looking like a QB, I don't know. Bernie Kosar looks a bit similar. Does he look like a QB?

reply

Interesting about Burt being offerred the role...
Especially since had just done a football movie (Semi-Tough) only a few years prior to this film.

Don't forget The Longest Yard

You're effing crazy Mac Davis was great in that role, ya gotta remember the book and the movie were 10 years apart so, the character of Maxwell was half Meredith half Staubach which David did excellent job Also, Hartman The religious Weirdo Was Danny white Who came up after

If you're a Big Fan of the NFL, you'd realize about least HALF the teams in the NFL (on any given year) don't have a Believable NFL Quarterback:):):)

Some specific Teams haven't had one for years.

But yes we did dress funny back in the 70s-through the 80s; which I believe our 80s clothing was worse.

Ironically, women wearing NFL sized ShoulderPads back then:):)
