Apparently Kubrick watched THE JERK dozens of times and would constantly quote the film during the shooting of THE SHINING. The first time I heard this I felt incredibly validated, as it's been one of my favorite comedies since first seeing it in junior high.

I think it was one of his daughters that said that he was a big fan of "Emmerdale Farm" (a British soap opera) of all things! There's been so much written about Kubrick being this moody, intellectual loner over the years, but after his death it became more apparent how regular and dare I say it, "average" he seemed as a person ; he was clearly highly intelligent and judging by "The Making of The Shinning" was more attentive to his vision than his actors were often willing to be (though Shelly Duval does comes across as a winger in that documentary), but I don't get the feeling he was a malicious man and certainly not the pseudo-intellectual poseur people assumed him to be ; he struck me as too much of a realist for that.

I can think of several reasons why he would like it but the one that jumps to mind would be the homage to 2001 a space odyssey in the Jerk when the guy throws Navin his glasses and a very thus spake Zarathustra piece of music plays.
You see Kubrick shot the famous scene of the bone flying through the air himself over and over again on the MGM lot.
It probably tickled him to see the send up.
Wow I guess Kubrick's sense of humor is as juvenile and stunted as he is a developed director.

2001 Space odyssey, Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket aren't great? Kubrick directed few movies, but most of them are very interesting and watchable.
