Why did.....
Why did Nikki run off? I definitely remember jake saying to her 'maybe theres something i could do, let me do something for you' and she just ran off with a heartbroken look on her face/ what?

shareI just saw it on dvd and I don't know why either. Maybe I'll take another look.
shareThat scene is the whole point of the movie. They became friends, but they were from different worlds. She did not join him in his lifestyle just as he would not have wanted to stay and join her.

Of course, but when she said 'then you'll forget about me' she must have been hinting that she wanted some sort of help from Jake. Yet when he was trying to say something, she just split.
shareSomeone else on the forum claimed Jake lied and abandoned Niki in the end, which is entirely untrue. Through his relationship with Niki, and the descent into the dark aspects of humanity, he found the feeling part of himself he only prior had expressed through rage or not at all.
That being said, she became as if she was his daughter, though he at least both struck out against her and expressed love for her (all within the same minute or so, but still). Jake did with Niki what Kirstin wanted most out of him, and what does Niki do? Exactly what Kirstin had done, she runs away. She effectively takes on that same aspect, but for entirely opposite reasons. Seems to me the message is you can't save everyone, just save yourself by trying to save others. Or something.
Thats an excellent take on it SirStack.
shareI also consider that scene to be the point of the movie. And it was foreshadowed in Niki's conversation with the detective:
Detective: Granville's looking for you anyway.
Niki: Who's that?
D: You know. The dude with the big white car. The guy who bought you that ring. I know that boy. He can make life real tough on a working girl. He can get you strung out again. He'll get you sniffing and then snorting and shooting.
N: You both can *beep* off.
D: You're taking a big chance.
N: I don't plan on seeing him again, anyway.
D: Oh, no? What are you going to do, get a job? Office temporaries? Computer programmer? Cosmetologist?
N: Jake will take care of me.
D: Who? Vandorn? You got to be kidding yourself, honey. You think once he finds his daughter he's going to think about you? No way, kid. You'll be strictly yesterday's papers.
I got the idea, warranted or not, that she wanted more from him; for him to rescue her. At the end of the film he basically offers her some money and gives up. Maybe Nikki was hoping go back with them, etc. It became clear that he felt bad for her, but obviously didn't care for her enough to go after her like he did for his daughter. The whole reason the daughter ran was because she didn't feel loved. She came back to him because she finally felt loved. Since Nikki wasn't loved by Jake, she ran away too.
I agree.
Jake still didn't "get" Nikki. He was at a loss as to what to "do for her," so he just basically offers her money.
She's hurt and angered that Andy's (detective) prediction came true, so she bolts.
I think Jake considered going after her, but was more concerned for his daughter.
I imagine, though, an Epilog as someone else suggested: Once back in Mich., Jake finds Nikki through Andy and has her fly back to Grand Rapids for rehab & maybe a job at the plant. She could even become some kind of mentor to Kristen.
Well, I know Schrader isn't known for pat, happy endings.

I interpreted Nikki running off as her rejecting Jake and his world. Maybe she had always been a street kid and the religious suburban life was too foreign for her.
Just because that lifestyle worked for the VanDorn family, doesn't mean it was any kind of prize for anyone else. I also would have felt too oppressed and constricted in the lifestyle shown at the beginning of the movie.
I wouldn't make it in Nikki, Tod, Rattan and Andy Mast's world either.
No two persons ever watch the same movie.share
