Did anyone else get horror movie vibes from this?

The creepy “Welcome to Alcatraz” introduction during the storm, Wolf’s terrifying glares & demeanor, the constant musical riffs during the digging sequences that sound like they’re from “Halloween,” the entire scene where Doc mutilates himself, etc. It’s like they couldn’t decide if it was going to be a docudrama, thriller, or horror film. Definitely one of Eastwood’s most unique roles.

I got vibes that Shawshank Redemption got a lot from this movie.

No doubt. Shawshank is a sugarcoated version of this.

Sugarcoated? Guards in this movie are much more patient and forgiving. Attacking a guard with a knife in Shawshank Redemption would've caused a nasty beating to death.

Probably as much as 'Escape from Alcatraz' got from Jacques Becker's 'Le Trou' (1960) and Robert Bresson's 'A man Escaped' (1956) or 'Pickpocket' (1959) (for the scene at the parlour between Charley and his wife)
