Are you the guy who was welded into the car for that bet? That was classic.

Been waiting for this to come out for a few years now. I keep checking the site to see when it will be on Cinemax or something so I can at least record it. This needs to be in my collection!

CALIFORNIA DREAMING gets a TV airing tonight at 6 PM Eastern on THiS-TV, a subchannel network seen over-the-air on many digital stations. It'll probably be edited for content, but may be better than nothing until something better comes along.

Did anyone see this? I didn't see the post in time but I don't think I get THIS-TV - unless it goes by another name (RETRO TV maybe?). Are there addl airings scheduled?

reply

Yes, I managed to record it to my DVD recorder's hard disk, edited out the commercial breaks and saved a copy on a DVD.

The movie was heavily edited, with lots of language bleeps and nudity scenes cut out, but as I haven't seen it in years, I felt that this was slightly better than no copy at all.

I've not seen any more runs scheduled on THiS TV ( http://www.this.tv ), but since the movie is in the MGM stable, they'll probably run it again and again. Keep checking the schedule if you're interested.

I've only seen this movie once, and am dying to see it again, it was really good.

I find it interesting that Vestron Video released this movie way back in the mid-80's and yet it's never been re-released since. One of those video mysteries. (Note: I think Vestron went out of business around 1989. I have about 170 Vestron videos in my collection -- including CALIFORNIA DREAMING -- and the latest date I have on a Vestron box is 1988).

Even though the soundtrack is altered on the video it's still a good movie. Has more depth than a viewer might expect when you first start watching.

And Glynnis O'Connor does look good sans top.

Watching it reminds me of the free'n'easy '70s and how long ago it was.

..just sent this to Lion's Gate, for the helluvit:

"..conecting the dots, it seems that Lions Gate has absorbed the former VESTRON VIDEO...is there any chance that the title CALIFORNIA DREAMING (1979 theatrical release w/ Dennis Christopher, etc., released on VHS by VESTRON in the 80's) will be considered for a DVD release by Lions Gate Home Entertainment?

Many out here, including the writer of CD Ned Wynn, are looking for it.

That VideoETA site was a big letdown. They had Dennis Christopher's name and other info of this movie to be released on 1-15-08 and then they changed it all to that garbage show with Lea Thompson.

Not interested in the price gouging on Amazon or ebay just because it's hard to find. I'll get it cheap sooner or later and if it isn't released I'll wait for one of the movie channels to air it and then record to dvd. I hit myself for not doing this back in 2001 when it was on HBO.

I feel so lucky! I taped the movie off of HBO when it was on back in '84-ish, and it has the original music soundtrack. Apparently the song California Dreamin was taken out of the movie somewhere along the line, due to a musical rights dispute. (Back then, music rights were not part of artist contracts - in 1979 when the film came out, there WERE no commercial video releases. Indeed, Magnetic Video's first 50 titles (20th Century Fox) didn't come out until late 1979, and no one ever forsaw the what came to be known as a "video store". That's why movies like "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" have altered soundtracks, and why movies like "American Hot Wax" have never come out on DVD. I feel very fortunate that (being a tape-a-holic - and still am) that I got all these shows off of pay cable back when they were on. Real rarities now! Anyhow, I have not heard anything about this movie coming out on DVD. Like so many other movies that came out on VHS in the early to mid 80's, they are just lost in time. (And then there are movies, like Lindsay Wagner and Peter Fonda's "Two People" or Marta Kristin's "Once" (Judy Robinson, Lost in Space) that never came out even on VHS!)
