Overrated

Anyone thinking this was a "masterpiece" is shallow and knows very little about cinema.

The overly simplified movie did very little to flesh out the back stories of the some of the other characters, or to present them with any real substance and motivation. Each character was defined by a few lines of dialog that represented nothing original nor enticing. The moving never developed any real tension via the plot. The story was not original, nor was it intriguing, and the ending was of the cookie cutter variety.

There was no real entertainment value. Everything was superficial and dominated by cliches and mantras. There was no evolution of characters, no real dramatic motivational cues, no sense of romance, tension, or sympathy/empathy.

Essentially, the movie didn't do anything of note. It would appeal to a certain demographic (said demographic being very obvious), but not to a broad audience.

Breaking Away certainly isn't anything special.

this movie kinda underated to me.. and of course its great

At the wrap party, I remember Dennis Christopher commented to me, much like some dialogue from the film that the movie would be like a photograph to look at years afterwards and to recall that time.

So much has changed in every way but there it is. A small part of a lot of lives, chrystalized in time for everyone else to share

breaking away is an awe-inspiring film...
so you were right

I bet this guy didn't even watch the film. Looks like a decent cut n paste job though. Not a single example from the film used to back up his claims....

Over-rated by the fact that maybe didn't deserve Best Picture nomination - OK

But still a decent movie worth checking out

Everybody that sees a movie that they don't like, but is nevertheless well rated, thinks the movie is overrated. That doesn't give you privilege to look down on those with whom you disagree. Maybe you should read your own tagline.

Yes, the movie appeals to a small demographic. Only people who grew up and transitioned from adolescence into adulthood, leaving old friends behind can relate to it. Since you never made that transition, it cannot appeal to you.

Yes it is. One of the best films of its time.

I guess I'm shallow and know very little about cinema, because I think "Breaking Away" is a masterpiece. My thanks to the brilliant, sophisticated OP for leading me to this revelation about myself.
