I'm angry with the maid

Her name was Louise I think.
She left the house for the last time after the old man died, and was talking to Chance, she knew she wasn't coming back.
She knew that Chance, with his limited mental capacity, would have a horrible time being put out on his own.

Didn't she feel any obligation toward him? She said she raised him since he was a boy. That must have been over 30 years.
She just left him there. Knowing he couldn't function, and not knowing what would become of him. Her last words being something like "You should get yourself a nice woman..."

I think Louise is a heartless, unlikable, and unrealistic character.

To danno02-1: I agree. To make matters even worse, after she says "You oughta find yourself a lady, Chance..." She further and, very cruelly, adds:..."but I guess it oughta be an old lady, 'cause you ain't gonna do a young one any good, not with that little thing of yours!" What a cruel, heartless thing to say! Suppose he had said to her... "Your shriveled little wrinkly tits and stretched out canyon of a hole ain't gonna do no man any good either!" My point is that these are both very cruel things to say and such things should never be said to anyone!

I always thought that Louise's remark was meant to emphasize (to the audience) Chance's childlike qualities.

Probably she felt free to make what to normal people would be an insensitive (if not hurtful) remark because she knew he wouldn't understand it anyway.
