why they made Willard go though the ordeal to get to the camp where the playboy bunnies came to dance. I assume that if the USO could get entertainment to the troops at that location they could have dropped Willard off at that same camp.

My guess is that they needed Willard’s journey to be discreet. Dropping him off at that camp would have probably raised attention and question marks. The mission to kill Kurtz was highly classified, embarrassing to the military, and maybe even illegal.
