It was the 70's and people smoked where they wanted--even in outer space.

shareFair, but that's when it was filmed, not when it was set. It's so far in the future that by that point probably hardly anyone will be smoking. But that's just an oversight because the writers weren't psychic.

Aside from hazard, it would be a complete waste to fill a vessel in space with more than 21%.
The ISS for example also has 21% oxygen.
It looks cool.
shareWhy? There is nothing to indicate the atmosphere is pure oxygen or there is a danger to the ship ... aside from the second hand smoke for the other crew members.
shareNo worse than the corporation placing the alien life as an indispensable priority juxtaposed to the safety and well-being of the crew being a secondary nuisance at best.
