I had no idea he had passed. I read his book a couple of years ago.
shareThere's a guy that could use a biographical action movie.
shareThere’s a good idea!
shareI did a lot of research into Hoare for a blu-ray commentary I contributed to (which still hasn't been released but will be on a mercenary-themed movie). The guy had some seriously impressive credentials being a successful but bored accountant during his post-WW2 life who then turned into a world class adventurer who fought as a mercenary in several African bush wars. His last big hurrah was LONG AFTER his book came out (Congo Mercenary - which inspired this film and many others such as DOGS OF WAR and DARK OF THE SUN) and after the ensuing films, which was the failed coup in the Seychelles in 1981! Hoare and several other mercenaries came to the country to overthrow the government but their hidden weapons were discovered at the airport. The others were able to get their weapons out of their luggage and took over the airport (killing one soldier) and a hijacked a plane to get back to South Africa. I think they all did a little bit of prison time over the whole affair but not more than a few months apiece (besides Hoare who was locked up for nearly 3 years). There were a few wounded guys they had to leave behind though who rotted away in prison for years and/or died though if I recall.
