How old would your kid have to be to be able to see it?
Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.

Me Neither I really want to because of Susan but at 15 my mom still says NO!!
Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.

Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.
haha, you've got a massive collection already, haven't you?????????
"Can I get ya anything? Coffee? Tea? Me?"
I have 27 Susan movies wwhich is alot but it wont ever be complete till i ca see Pretty baby White Palace The hunger and various other riskay movies!!!
Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.
i dont know how old you have to be, because laws and parents differ from state to state, but i think if i had seen this as a child i would have fallen in love with it, it probobly would have become a favorite of mine. of course i was very young the first time i saw the blue lagoon for the first time as well and thats always been a favorite too.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other, and when I am alone I am together.
well im 15 and my mom says i have to wait god i hate being young!!
Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.
It's fun, when you are older, to look back on being a teenager, but these people who tell you "these are the best years of your life" are full of it. They are the best years of your life to look back on, not to actually live through.
You couldn't pay me enough to live through it again (and I could use the money).

Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.

Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.
I was already over 20 when I saw this but I pretty sure my parents would have let me see it as a small child anyway but not as a teen.
shareWhy would your parents let you watch it as a child and not an adult??
thanks guys for the help :)
Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.
When I was six I probably wouldn't have been interested in this movie in the first place. If I would have seen it for what ever reason I would have simply thought of it as some movie about a pretty girl, watched it for ten minutes, and then went on.
At thirteen I would have asked way too many questions than my parents would have cared to answer lol.
I watched this movie when I was 12...Well, my parents don´t know that I´ve seen it.
I think I would let decide my child him-/herself at what age he/she want to watch it. Maybe not until 14 but then I think it´s ok. I don´t regret that I watched it but 12 was really a little bit too young.
Oh honey pie, you are making me crazy, I´m in love but I´m lazy, so won´t you please come home
yeah well only a few more years and i guess i can watch it but is it good or is discusting like some posters say?? my isntrest in it is Susan Sarandon because she's my favorite actress so im trying to see all of her movies :)
Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.
While Brooke Shields and her twelve year old nudity get most of the attention around here, I actually thought that Sarandon did a good job.

I definetly don't beleive that this is a appropiate movie for the child. The whole movie is about prostitution with a sick twisted kick of innocent romance thrown in. First time I watched this was like 6 yrs. ago when a friend bought it and I was only like 20. I found the movie very disturbing-even at 20. Maybe the one that wrote the story or the one that made the movie was sick. You never know.
Tho I feel I would have looked at it not so harsh if she had been 15 instead of 12. 12 was way too young. Brookes mother took the part for her daughter while other mothers weren't allowing their daughters to take the role because Brookes mother is a alcoholic. She was doing whatever it took to pimp her daughter out.
I can see alot of guys points for their reasoning as to why they think 15 yr. olds are hot & all but that doesn't make it right. I'm a girl & I can honestly say that considering I'm gonna be 27 tomorrow that a 15 yr. olds mind set is not at all the same as a 20 yr. old. Nor is the mind set of a twelve yr. old the same as a 15 yr. old. Therefor, its best to wait till they are 18 or at least 17.
And the mind set of a twenty-seven-year-old isn't the same as a forty-year-old.

And I'd like to know what your comment has to do with what I said? 27 yr. olds are alot more able to comprehend a 40 yr. old than a 12 yr. old or 15 yr. old are. Being 27 I clearly have the mindset to watch this-but a 15 yr. old should not be watching this. In fact noone under 18 should watch this. It's not suitable for minors. Don't get so defensive with me when i don't even know you. You took a senseles jab and to prove what????
shareI didn't take a jab, senseless or otherwise. Don't be so quick to assume that the open hand is preparing to karate chop you. It could be there for shaking.
Now, as to what I was "proving:" that no matter what age you are, you will probably have a significantly different mind set when you are older than that. I could have followed up to say that the mind set of a forty-year-old is not the same as the mind set of an eighty-year-old.
Also (and this might qualify as a jab), could you please tell me what happens between fifteen and eighteen (or, the way you wrote this, perhaps between seventeen years, eleven months and eighteen) which causes a person to be so much more able to understand Pretty Baby?

Well to put it straight. A 15 yr. old girls mind is not the same as a 18 yr. old's. At 15 their mind is based on naiveness & stupidity. Grant ya you can be naive and stupid at any age but a 15 yr. old girl does not think the same as a 18 yr. old. At 15 in today's society they are all about makeup and who can lose their virginity first. At 18 they are thinking about why were they in such a rush to loose it at 15 and what they are gonna do to get into the best college or what is a easy way out of having to work a hard job rest of their lives. Their mindsets are different. Now with boys I think it's same thing but omit the makeup & the 'why did i lose it so early' part. lmao But ya I'm sure you get what I mean. I beleive there is always a different mindset with kids being within a 2-3 yr. age difference. It's part of growing up & knowing what is wrong from right!!
shareI do agree to a point but I have to say I watched this movie when I was like 11 or 12 and I feel that for me personally I was old enough to watch it because I could handle it. I grew up watching more adult oriented movies as well as horror movies since I was like 5 years old so I became used to those types of more adult R rated movies. My mom had this movie on VHS and I decided to watch it and my mom didn't really care, she gave me freedom to watch whatever I wanted, as long as it wasn't porn or something lol. I'm 25 now and it's been a while since i've seen this movie because I have no idea what happened to the VHS tape it was on but I remembered when I watched this at 12 I was very disturbed by it and thought it was very sad and depressing but at the same time I really liked the movie and thought it was very interesting to see that side of a type of life so drastically different than mine. I was around the same age as Violet at the time so it really touched me and I felt for her character. I also remember being shocked that this movie showed Brooke Shields naked being that she was a little kid. I still think this is a great movie today, it's a harsh look at a realistic side of life for many women and even at my young age I was able to realize how sad it was and I also knew how wrong it was what this poor little girl was being put through, she had lost her childhood and her innocence. So I think it really depends on the kid and if that kid is mature enough to handle a movie like this and if they are then yeah I would let my kid watch this movie. Plus Susan Sarandon is GREAT in this movie!
share[deleted]
My mom saw it when she was 12.
Thats ridic that your mom won't let you.
thanks guys :)
Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.
I say, its all about your maturity level. I know its cliche, and garret, crabs, you've probably heard that before, but its true. Maybe your parents think you two aren't mature enough to handle such disturbing and explicit material. Or maybe they don't want to expose you to the horrors and traumas of life too soon through film. The second explanation is a little far-fetched, but hey, who knows? Me, I first saw the film when I was what.... I think your age garret, and I even watched it with my mother, who had no problem with me watching it. But then again, the only explicit movie she ever had a problem with me watching was spun, which was VERY disturbing, TOO in-your-face explicit, and just all out extreme. Which is why I had to sneak and watch it on my own. Which is all part and partial of being a teenager and the whole "if someone tells you not to do something, you want to do it even more" complex that humans seem to have. But, my point is, I was mature enough to watch these films and not go "eww!" or "sqweee!" everytime a gross, disturbing, or interesting part came on. I just watched the films with a quiet interest, and took them as they were.
BTW, Susan hasn't got much of a role, because she's only in the first half-to early middle part of the film. So your not missing much. And xenophile, your a very interesting adult, because all the ones I know would give their right arm to have their teen years back, what with all the stress and troubles that come with being an adult that you'd probably never experience as a teen.
If I could have the energy, health-in-spite-of-all-things, optimism... the YOUTHFULNESS while still retaining my adult rights, privileges, and accumulated experience, then hell yeah, sign me up.

well im really no sure usually my mom has no problem with extream stuff in films but however she tries to protect us from thinngs she doesent think we are reay for for instance she's let me watch things like Bull Durham which is way less of a deal than Pretty Baby as far as adult content im sure but she says no to three Susan films : White Palace, The Hunger, and Pretty Baby, but i only have to wait a year and a half so it's no big deal i'll occupy myself with some other Susan films till then :)
Susan:I think I stay an actor b'cuz you can't get it right. So there is a challenge to it.
Hi tgctgarrett, Whatever you think about Pretty Baby (Some people just don't get Louis Malle although for a taste of his style you could try "Au Revoir Les Enfants"), you're in for a real treat with "The Hunger" Dark, Beautiful and disturbing it's one of thoes films that really gets under your skin. By far the best film Susan Sarandon has yet made.
I suppose it's that aspect of the three films you mentioned that your mother has a problem with. I saw "The Hunger" when I was 14 and I can honestly say I didn't appreciate it. Years later I saw it again when I was 28 and it all came together.
I agree redmama...I watched this movie when I was like 11 or 12 and I feel that for me personally I was old enough to watch it because I could handle it. shareMy child? It would entirely depend on their individual maturity level but I think that looking objectively and healthily at the themes here is more important than notches on your bed post or the candles on your b-day cake.
I just watched this today for the first time.
For example: I was disturbed by the auction of Violet's virginity, etc.., but I also have enough knowledge of history and psychology to know why she reacted in those situations the way she did and I can note the irresponsibility of the adults. I can, however also note that the time and circumstances made this not an abusive intent towards Violet but a rite of passage and a privelege to work in the field she was born into.
While I think Bellocq had a whole bag of social issues, he was in an expected romantic situation with a girl that was already considered a woman and not to mention, somewhat sexually mature and aggressive for her age, by most standards. Though it would be hard for anyone not to want to belong to the focus around her- which was in this case, sex...
So as far as my child- I would hope we would have a good enough relationship to be able to discuss any questionable content so that I know I'm influencing and teaching about things I would worry are misinterpreted or misunderstood.
I can say personally, that without any outside influence I doubt I would have healthily grasped this until 16-17 and I was much more educated and experienced than my peers.
i just think its funny that people shield there kids from nudity yet they let them watch shows with shooting and drug use. its like if i had a kid i rather that they see a movie with some nudity then killing. but that is just me.
shareIf you think about it, there's really no way to stop a child from seeing underaged nudity. All the kid needs is a mirror and a moment of privacy.
- Aging is a physical problem, and physical problems are amenable to engineering solutions.
yea that is true and most kids have played show me yours and i show you mine i mean it happens all the time so its like kinda hard to shield your kids from everything lol.
shareI saw this film when I was the came age as Shields. All of the sex basically went right over my head, and I was actually able to focus on the vanity, music and ennui of the characters and not the corruption. I don't think many kids would get it all, but if you've got a mature one, 14yrs would be okay. We watched What's Love Got To Do With It in 8th grade, and although it had sickening domestic abuse scenes and a rape scene, it was something we needed to be aware of in terms of human nature and what to watch out for.

"HOW VERY!!!!!!!"
I don't mind the nudity. It's way better than violence anyday. The nudity in PB I think was done tastefully, however I though that Belloq being allowed by the church to marry a child was a bit spacey, let alone the fact that both Belloq and Violet were attracted to each other despite the age gap and Violet was still a child. But by the same token I thought of it as really spacey that adults in a civilized community would ever entertain the idea of auctioning off a child for sex to the highest-paying bidder, even here in America for that matter.
